Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 April 2017 - I can only stop for a moment:  I am on my rounds, and still have rooms to check.  That we cats are known to sleep a good bit of the day is constantly raised as proof that we are a lazy lot.  Not so!  We are just very efficient in our use of time, so what might take an easily distracted peep an hour to accomplish can be dispatched by us cats in less than half that span.  What we do with the remainder of that hour really is up to us, and not anyone else's business.  Gotta run....

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 April 2017 - Savvy hotel staff know that the way to make guests feel comfortable in their lodging, besides offering a pillow-top bed, is to preserve the illusion of privacy.  That is why I only do a security check when the pale peep has vacated her room.  After a quick walk around the space, nose fully engaged, I am satisfied that all is well.  I quietly exit, no one the wiser.  Granted there may be a few telltale hairs and paw indentations across the bedspread, but like most peeps she doesn't appear overly observant.

plot twist

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 April 2017 - In this setting I could, without much of a stretch, be called the panther of the jungle.  Evidently the coat color, in the wild, is due to a melanin mutation.  Since my home is in the Americas, the correct designation would be black jaguar (otherwise it would be black leopard).  But my white accents mark me as just a pussy cat, not to be feared, not to be avoided (unless one is unluckily allergic).  Feel free to scratch my head... but don't attempt this maneuver at the zoo.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 April 2017 - I awoke this morning with anxiety, and the feeling was prescient:  some stranger has parked his truck in our driveway, and is currently tearing away at the back facade.  The pale peep is sleeping through the assault, and my peeps are immersed in their usual morning activities... I don't know how they can ignore the wolf at the door.  Surely they hear the racket and feel the pounding.  What can I do?  Perhaps the most useful recourse is to stick close... in case they need me.  And as much as is catly possible, I will breath comforting purrs.

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 April 2017 - Recent photographs have all been taken on the screened porch.  Why wouldn't anyone wish to be out there, enjoying the warm temperatures, without pesky mosquitoes?  My porch preference has little to do with the arrival of the pale peep:  she and I get along well.  I am convinced that she would share her rations with me if the shorter peep didn't intervene.  And yes, the shorter peep is back amongst us, I am delighted to report.  She and the pale peep appeared together, so I am not certain which one located the trail home.  All is good here at our domicile... I hope that you can say the same.

23 April 2017 - "Art" is defined as an expression, typically in visual form, to be primarily appreciated for its beauty or emotional power.  Although I would never, ever share my "deep and inscrutable singular name", that unassuming three-letter word is very close.  Of course beauty is also said to be in the eye of the beholder, and consequently my favorite artist is Kliban.  Who better captures our form, our essence, our grace?  Honestly, is it any wonder that highly civilized peeps venerate us?

22 April 2017 - Some mornings come too early.  My peeps kept me up late last night.  Being a creature of habit, I rose at my usual pre-dawn hour.  Isn't this behavior called "burning the candle at both ends"?  Well, my candle is sputtering at the moment.  In fact, no one in our household seems very energetic today.  It is important to take care of the body, so forgive me if I cut my thoughts short, and catch a bit more shut-eye.

moan day

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

17 April 2017 - Monday would never win a favorite-day-of-the week contest.  Although my peeps "commute" to work by walking up the stairs, they aren't oblivious to the day's negative connotations.  I am delighted to live outside the peep orbit, watching their movements from the periphery.  Most of the time only one eye is needed, allowing the other eye to doze.  What sane cat wants to be allied with crazy, frenetic peeps?  Mine may be as unnoticeable as a church mouse, but to my mind that makes them good company.

16 April 2017 - Rituals are comforting in their familiarity and in their connection to the past (and in their promise of a future).  Cats are more of-the-moment creatures, but those of us who live with peeps (long-suffering we are) can detect patterns:  there are mornings that the taller peep pulls on his padded shorts, mornings that the shorter peep grabs the grocery bags.  Then there is the arrival of the Sunday paper.  One doesn't have to be literate to enjoy the comics.  The story plays out in broad-brush fashion, some geared solely for adults, some for a general audience.  I just appreciate that there is a medium that doesn't ignore us felines... although I can't fathom life with an Odie.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

15 April 2017 - Even though (thankfully) we don't have house guests very often, I still routinely patrol the upstairs rooms.  Otherwise there is a weakness in our perimeter that enemies could take advantage of.  I am fond of this space because it is a guaranteed quiet place, should I not be in the mood for socializing.  For reasons that escape me, I have been found snoozing in the vanity sink.  Yes, it is hard and cold... I can offer no explanation. There also is a comfy bed, should I grow bored with the status quo.  Maybe I enjoy fancying myself a "guest"... as part of the family I must pull my weight.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

14 April 2017 - And what lies behind door #3?  As guardian of our domicile, I can't be lackadaisical .  If something strikes me as out-of-place or odd, I must heed my curiosity and label it friend or foe.  Ninety percent of the time there is no need to sound the klaxon... but from afar, with one eye shut, it is impossible to tell intent.  Paws on the job are what is required.  So a passerby might find me staring at a spot on the floor, and wrongly assume that I have dozed off.  Although I am fond of my naps, being inert might simply be the result of concentration:  are those legs?  has it moved?  what is that odor?  Perhaps I should poke it, see if it reacts.  Don't attempt this maneuver at home... unless you possess the reflexes of a cat.

Me-usings and Me-emories

13 April 2017 - I have lived with peeps all my life, minus the first few months, so I have first-hand knowledge of "vegging" out in front of the TV screen.  My two, especially after a physically draining day, will sit here, almost lifeless, and absorb the imagery flashing before their eyes.  The offerings are not aimed at my demographic (how often does a cat figure into the plot line?), but even so I look forward to these down times:  a lap that doesn't move for an hour is rare in our household... and I don't want to miss out.

12 April 2017 - I am in a bad place:  I have lost the shorter peep... the optimist in me wants to say she has been "misplaced".  I have walked the house, and there is no sign of her.  There has been a big-eyed beep in the back yard, hooting to his mates.  Could she have been snatched by these ne'er-do-wells?  The taller peep hasn't mounted a search, so I hope that he knows something that I don't.  Meanwhile, I don't dare let him out of my sight.  What if he goes missing?  Who would feed me?  Despair doesn't become me.
