spare the pea pod

14 Sep 2021 - What do you do, without thinking, after a meal?  Wipe your mouth with the napkin?  Place napkin to one side of the plate?  Gather utensils and place on plate?  Similarly I have habits triggered when I finish eating.  Napkins and utensils don't figure into a cat's life, but I am compelled to cover the leftovers.  Nothing is actually accomplished by my swiping the floor, but like a sentence it requires that terminating period.  Perhaps in a former life, with only the muscle memory as corroboration, I buried a few morsels for a later snack... nothing was ever so abundant that waste was an option.

potential energy

13 Sep 2021 - When the future stretches out before me, sometimes interminably so, I seek my navel (a never-ending search) and stretch my hind legs toward the horizon.  That small physical act brings me back to the solidity of my body and the grounding of my weight upon terra firma.  Whether it be achiness or twitchy muscles, the elongation eases the discomfort.  Cats are known for their effortless leaps and bounds, the grace of a Bolshoi dancer.  Were it not for our disregard of a musical beat and our refusal to wear a bristly tutu, we could be the raves of the stage and the darlings of future Balanchines.  But go ahead and throw flowers if you'd like.

12 Sep 2021 - Early morning sun favors this spot, and so you'll find me here... until a lap offer is made.  Can you make out the ghostly feline sitting on the deck?  How ironic that he wishes to come inside, and I hanker to explore "out there".  Although the peeps come and go through this portal, it has not yielded to my entreaty.  But I should be circumspect about my petitions:  what if the tuxedo apparition was sent by Bastet as a warning?  I seem to recall that in those moments when it opened, cold air has rushed into the room.  Perhaps I should just sit on my warm mat and gaze toward the east.

11 Sep 2021 - Cats are fond of ruts, but not wishing to be too predictable, I auditioned another nap site last evening.  The peeps were nearby, engrossed in one of their board games, so it didn't feel too dangerous to venture onto an unfamiliar piece of furniture.  Of course I gave it a thorough twice-over with my first-rate nose, and then satisfied that former occupants were of the distant past I curled up.  Its proximity to a lake view and its singular seating give it high marks, certainly worthy of another visit.  I did regret that at this removed distance head pats didn't materialize... although I am certain I was at the center of the peeps' conversation.

10 Sep 2021 - Work hard, sleep well... there are worse philosophies.  And on a day without sunshine, the primo spot for a nap is a peep lap.  The shorter one doesn't sit still long enough for my daily quota of shut-eye, so I snatch at my needed rest as opportunity presents itself.  The rest is grabbed wherever I can find warmth, and I have discovered that a recently vacated seat isn't a bad substitute for a thermal body.  I am a student of life's lessons, which doesn't make me erudite but does enable me to live to romp another day.

golden hour

9 Sep 2021 - Slowly I am mapping out this new dwelling, noting when to be where.  For example, there is a time during early afternoon during which this ordinary spot on the sofa becomes the most desirable place in the house.  I find it interesting that there is no competition for this bright pool of warmth, but as it's to my advantage to be the sole claimant I won't argue with my peeps' decision to be elsewhere...  although I wouldn't begrudge lying on a lap in this sunshine.  Obviously it is harder to bake my bones when it is cloudy, so I am still hunting for a gray-day solution.  As a backup plan, an appeal to Bastet will be made.

8 Sep 2021 - Yesterday's photo caught me sitting in the same spot... obviously it has its vantage.  Not only am I keeping an eye (actually both) peeled for interlopers, but I am spying on the shorter peep... and she on me.  She does the same thing back at the other domicile (the one with the screened porch):  exits through a peep portal and does busy things "out there".  The length of time she stays varies greatly, and sometimes she wanders far enough that I can no longer see her, sometimes the taller peep accompanies her.  But, so far, she always returns, maybe smelling of home turf, other times of strange places and creatures.
