14 May 2023 - One of the things I enjoy about our domicile is all the levels:  if I need a boost in spirits, then I trot up a flight of stairs and look down on the world.  It is purely symbolic, but that is the stuff of great literature.  And it was very thoughtful of my peeps to provide a cushion for these layover spots... it makes the lying around so much more inviting.  From here I can keep a watchful eye on breakfast preparation... it wouldn't do to be late for my treats.

13 May 2023 - Usually our domestic seas are quite tranquil, but in this photograph I appear to be on a pitching vessel.  To be atop a large body of water is a frightening thought to most cats, and that was fortunately not the case here.  Someone who has experience reading a cat would conclude that I'm not afraid in this picture:  no muscle tension, ears at a normal tilt.  Standing on a surface that has texture, one that I can get my claws into, is comforting... for then I know that I can climb out of reach (of crashing waves) or speedily skedaddle (from strange peeps).

12 May 2023 - If given my choice of cushions, I would pick the shorter peep's lap.  It has all the criteria for a cat's comfy spot, elevation and ease of access and good sight lines, but what it uniquely offers is a heated seat and head pats.  The one drawback (alas, I don't live in Eden) is its transitory nature:  whereas I can always find the corner chair in that corner and unoccupied, that is not the case with the shorter peep's lap.  Although I might grouse and consider boycotting, the smart move on my part is to claim the lap when it presents itself... live in the moment.

11 May 2023 - I have very little down time, meaning awake and free of duties.  But the shorter peep has captured one of those rare moments, when I had nothing to do but enjoy my view... and to acknowledge that I have a very comfortable life, thank you, Bastet.  My circumstances could have been very different... this alternate me might already have used up several life cycles, and might weigh in a pound or two lighter due to intermittent meals.  Of course "what if?" is a fictional tale, but even so we shouldn't be smug about our present circumstances.

what is this?

10 May 2023 - Wasn't it just yesterday I was musing about feline curiosity?!  My need to investigate and verify happens quite frequently, a direct consequence of living in a mysterious world.  For example, the pictured chair typically occupies this corner, but in a slightly different orientation.  And someone clearly doesn't understand how cushions are to be used.  It all smells familiar, but my other senses are having to process the differences.  The current arrangement is fairly useless for both me and the peeps, but I'll keep an eye on things... a bit more order may be imposed.

9 May 2023 - Now that afternoon temperatures are consistently toasty, I am spending more of my day on my personal screened porch.  It is the one spot where I am part of our surroundings, able to observe and eavesdrop on the interlopers without the muffling obstruction of walls and portals.  Of course I am also more exposed to their watchful eyes, but after an interval of lying motionless I am largely overlooked.  And it is hardly a challenge for me to become one with the cushion on which I'm sprawled.

touch-and-go

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

8 May 2023 - Look, meow, no paws!  Yes, sometimes even cautious moi engage in risky behavior... but no animals were harmed in the feat, white coats and lawyer sorts were not required.  The thing that typically gets a cat into trouble is curiosity, and so naturally I just had to taste this bit of greenery (it definitely would provide fiber in one's diet).  Now that I know that its flavor doesn't rival the mmm-mmm-good of my treats, I see no point in doing it again... unless an interloper happens to be hiding there.
