take it uneasy

Me-usings and Me-emories

17 Aug 2021 - It is laughable to make an inanimate object one's nemesis... so I'll just say there is no love lost here.  A few days ago, this black box made its appearance, and then whoosh, I was whisked away to the lair of a masked stranger.  The shorter peep never left my side, and despite being outnumbered, in the end she prevailed:  I was snatched from his grip and returned home, feeling a bit icky and having a sore haunch.  Time spent out on my screened porch revived me, and I had hoped that memory could be filed in a dark corner.  But here it is again, lurking, waiting for who knows what... perhaps a dropped guard or a too-close inspection.  I sense fur-boding.

watch me go

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

16 Aug 2021 - Despite my being an indoor cat, I don't feel confined.  Our abode easily accommodates the three of us, with ample space to have one's own undisturbed nook.  And as the domicile guardian, I have come to know its layout backwards and forwards, up and down.  It has more than typical "up and down" features:  five sets of stairs, railings that overlook floors below, even a ladder (60% of which I have scaled).  I like to think of it as my very own jungle gym, with places to sprint and jump and climb.  No swinging has been attempted, but that really isn't a cat thing.  The shorter peep makes it clear when I have "crossed" the line of acceptable behavior, but there remains a lot of room for fun.

quasi, more or less

Me-usings and Me-emories

15 Aug 2021 - I am tapping into the power of a triangle.  The structural ability to deflect pressure out and away is a trick we should all learn.  Geometry aside, I am sure the primary reason I like this perch is its elevation, its view, and its overhead shelter... but it is also comforting to know that the house isn't going to crash down upon my head while I gaze out the window.  Occasionally, especially when a storm is whipping the trees, I hear a loud thump on the roof, followed by a skittering noise (I swear a few days ago it was the taller peep), but the center, knock on wood (and there is a lot to choose from) holds.

14 Aug 2021 - By dawn's early light... actually the sun had been up a while, and this noshing is my second snack of the day.  I believe in breaking the overnight fast, and actually consume very little the remainder of the day (unless treats are offered).  The shorter peep is much more "scheduled" about her food intake, but obviously we are different creatures.  I take note of her meal times, because they are sure ways for me to get needed attention (and handouts).  About half of her midday seatings I miss because of my work schedule on the screened porch, but through the glass she will wave a greeting.

what's the hurry

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

13 Aug 2021 - Pictured is my waning patience, handling the post-breakfast but pre-porch-portal-opening interval.  Sometimes the minutes stretch into an age, meanwhile I grow older.  It helps somewhat to pass the wait seated upon a cushion.  The shorter peep, I have noticed, fills time hunched over a page of squiggles.  I have tried hunkering down on a sample she has set aside, and other than a slight elevation improvement it does nothing for me... but not everything carries across different species.  My two, for example, have no interest in my kibble or my treats, and I appreciate the lack of competition in the food department.  And I would certainly starve if solely fed from their table.

safety CATch

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

12 Aug 2021 - To be with my peeps, or not to be with my peeps... that is my dilemma.  I can recall when they would sit with me on the screened porch, but evidently I love summer's heat more than they do.  Yet I would be shirking my job to remain inside, ignoring the interlopers' assault on the northern front.  So the dilemma solves itself, thanks to my work ethic.  However I do periodically check on them, during breaks between surveillance stints.  Keeping the peeps safe requires me to know where they are (and if they are engaged in risky behavior)... but what to do if they ignore my concerned warning?

ack, no ledge

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

11 Aug 2021 - Once upon a time, I was an outdoor cat, but now I live indoors.  The adjustment was easier than you think.  Aside from all the perks of being cared for, I have the run of a large space with lots of glass.  I feel as if I am still out there, poking around the bushes, skulking in the shadows... but from my safe overlook.  Never did I have beeps fluttering and chirping inches from my nose until I sat on this window ledge.  Of course these same windows, while allowing my glares and scares, block my coup-de-grace swipes.  But, since I no longer have to hunt to survive, I really can't complain about this more civilized arrangement.
