17 Apr 2023 - Yesterday one of you readers warned me of a peep assault, and indeed I spent the afternoon listening to their loudness and hoping that my safe spot would go unassailed.  When the din subsided, of course I had to resume my patrol... and I discovered unmistakeable evidence of their encampment.  Besides the telltale peep smells, my nose found these two pictured "things"... I don't know what else to call them.  As if the rightful owner will not claim then, the shorter peep has placed the odd objects beside my stuffed playthings... so maybe I won the gewgaw lottery?

16 Apr 2023 - The shorter peep has caught me in my early-morning break.  Obviously I've been up for hours, but she has not... and I am waiting for her to catch up.  It isn't all sharpening my claws:  the portal onto my screened porch has been opened, so that I could make the first patrol, and I've enjoyed a few treats... you know, the sort of routine that I don't want to miss.  And these restful, quiet minutes, before the day cranks into full gear and demands my complete attention, allow me to fondly anticipate the next item on the agenda:  my breakfast!

limited resources

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

15 Apr 2023 - Whoever framed in these portals had a cat in mind.  There is ample room to walk (although reversing direction lacks grace), to sit, to nap.  Mostly I use the ledge for sentry work... here I am overlooking our eastern flank (well, I was overlooking until I heard a peep stealthily approaching).  This direction is the one used by peep interlopers, the worst kind since other than sounding the alert (by skedaddling to my safe spot), there is little I can do to repel them.

14 Apr 2023 - Feline flexibility means that sometimes we look as though we were spilled upon the floor, a soft and furry splat.  That everyone doesn't have this suppleness is evident by watching my two peeps rise from their knees.  At first their emanating noises sent me scurrying for cover, but after careful observation that nothing horrid ensued, I now just classify those crepitations as part of a peep's repertoire, filed next to nose-blowing and singing.  I am able to walk through our domicile without sound effects, but perhaps I'll develop creaks with age.

13 Apr 2023 - There are times when we all need a quiet space, a spot we can claim as our own... and if it happens to be comfy, lucky you!  The shorter peep and I often meet here, but snatching a few moments with me, myself, and I is also quite nice.  And if I tucked my head, I could blend right into the background and disappear from casual consideration.  I have discovered that I can duck behind those portal covers, giving me additional camouflage, and at the same time survey our southern flank.  I like these two-fer opportunities.

12 Apr 2023 - I often pause before beginning my work day, not because of dissatisfaction with what lies ahead (I like my job) but to get myself in the right mind-set.  Concentration and attention to detail siphon energy, and I need to consciously make that shift from easy-going to time-to-pay-attention.  These moments also offer the chance to do a broad sweep of my kingdom and to acknowledge what a beautiful spot it is.  This daily recognition puts into perspective why walking the beat is so important and keeps spring, in both senses, in my step.

11 Apr 2023 - I don't always have lofty aspurrations:  sometimes I am quite content to sprawl on the lowest level, on an even plane with the interlopers.  This photograph suggests the scale of my job:  I am responsible for a huge volume of space.  Would you care to guess how many ne'er-do-wells could fit in this picture?  Yes, a huge number, but because of my diligence, that amount is zero... or maybe one, as I just detected some motion beneath the sofa:  fuzz or foe?
