jack frost nipping

Me-ow-my-oh

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 December 2014 - I have had to keep a watchful eye on this big guy:  he seems restless, head swinging about, perhaps looking for a way out.  Sometimes deer wander into stores, the automatic doors beckoning them inside...but they seem to universally regret the decision, and in their panic misplace the exit. Or maybe they haven't lived around peeps long enough to realize the implication of doors...certainly in the great outdoors any direction can lead away from the thing one wishes to escape.  Somehow, when I was taking a break from sentry duty, the poor thing managed to get out of the house and onto the porch, although with our current nasty weather it is wise to remain sheltered there.  Its nose is not aglow, so it doesn't belong to Santa...but if it remains out there long the old snoot will definitely be cold and red.

make a joyful noise, not

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 December 2014 - Ah, the quiet after the storm!  There are those who enjoy being tossed about on white-capped waves and buffeted by gale-force winds, but don't count me among your ranks.  It is sufficiently life-affirming for me to realize I have survived the ordeal and can now relax undisturbed.  I handled the invasion of the peeps' peeps by retreating under the bedspread, emerging only when the noise abated.  It isn't the most friendly solution, but I am not known for my affability (and some of you may have wished to do the same).  What is that bromide?  "You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family."  Enough said.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 December 2014 - I would hope that you are all big enough to relinquish first impressions when they turn out to be inaccurate or incomplete.  Alas, certain personalities feel that such a change of opinion is indication of weakness...when really it underscores inflexibility.  Who wants a brain that has calcified?  As toys go, Santa's gift is satisfactory, certainly worth the occasional play time...and much more fun than I first thought.  Yesterday I wanted to just ignore it, but the tall peep kept pestering me to give it a try.  Mainly to satisfy his urging I gave it a closer inspection:  I still think that it is a silly thing, but then we all have our detractions.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 December 2014 - Now that I have wearied of the discarded paper and ribbon, I suppose I must acknowledge my gift from Santa.  Thanks, big red-suited peep, for this strange thing that evidently was someone's idea of a cat toy.  You know that I am cautious by nature, so you shouldn't take offense in my less than overjoyed first reaction.  I am sure that it will grow on me...like moss on the north side of a tree or algae on still water.  It's the thought that counts, so what exactly were you thinking??

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 December 2014 - It goes without saying that the box will be more interesting than its contents, but truthfully I prefer the balled-up wrapping paper.  It is so perfect for knocking around and tossing into the air.  Some of you grinches might feel the need to suggest that I like being the center of attention.  However just off camera is the receptacle for trash, so my place in the room was determined by a peep.  Had (s)he wanted me to be out in the hallway, (s)he should have possessed more forethought.  "It's not my fault", I feel compelled to add.  Besides today we all get a free pass on the naughty/nice list as Santa is understandably exhausted.  And I was not the one responsible for the reading glasses under the bed.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 December 2014 - I don't know how you are faring, but it has been raining cats and dim deeps on us, and I seem to have washed up on a new shore.  Well, not so new as I have been here before...although I don't remember the pinhead sitting behind me.  Besides leaving behind my favorite domicile we have wandered from the land of the sun:  it is very fortunate that I brought along my winter coat.  The only good thing is that my peeps and I managed to arrive together and that the locals are friendly enough...ok, that is two things.  But it is that time of year to count one's blessings, and I certainly don't want to be the complainer....other than to state for Santa's record that having a pool of sunshine in which to lie would be super thoughtful...and much appreciated.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

19 December 2014 - These things are reproducing right under our noses.  I take a short afternoon nap, and arise to discover more, lined up along the wall and cluttering the floor.  I sincerely hope that my peeps do not expect me to stand guard over these gaudy boxes, because I have checked and not a single one is tagged for me.  Would it have broken the bank to wrap up a bag of cat treats, anything at all to express gratitude for my faithfulness?  I try to push these thoughts aside and focus on what must be done.  It definitely isn't all about me.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

17 December 2014 - See, this is just what I mean:  I am certain that this package was on the other side of the room yesterday, and now it has closed ranks with others of its kind.  Something is brewing...a box rebellion maybe?  But my peeps should not worry, as I am on top of things (sorry, a bit of cat humor).  Worrisome evidence such as this underscores the need for me to remain vigilant, always on the move, eschewing needed naps in order to patrol the premises. The peeps are absolutely no help in these matters of safety, having been known to leave outside doors ajar and gas burners lit, and without relief how much longer can I go on?  We cats don't play well with others, but right now a tag team is what I need.

14 December 2014 - TSA or, for the uninitiated, Tomcat Security Administration, takes no chances...not even an under-the-table offer of catnip veers us from our duties.  Anything new in the domicile is immediately labeled "suspicious", and prompt action is taken to ascertain level of threat.  No dim-deep sweep of the area is needed (or wanted), as my sense of smell is more than adequate for the job.  The size of that package alone was of concern:  a large quantity of contraband could be concealed within its dimensions.  After swatting the purple ribbon for a potential booby trap, I let it pass.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

13 December 2014 - It is hard not to get lost, certainly overlooked, during the holiday madness.  I realize at some level that the lack of attention is not personal but rather a reflection of how much must be done in a limited amount of time...but there is still a tiny part of me that feels abandoned.  These dark thoughts are probably dim recollections of my days as a homeless stray.  Sad times indeed to feel unwanted.  Although my situation has changed much for the better, there are still too-many-to-count cousins out there in the cold, afraid, hungry.  In all this celebration and high holiday spirits let's not forget those less fortunate.

12 December 2014 - Things have been popping up on tabletops, counters, window ledges, all vaguely familiar but bearing a musty odor of long-time storage.  Why the shorter peep would want this particular example of kitsch in her peripheral vision can't be answered by me.  Its only attribute that I can relate to is the tiny red balls that move when swatted...but I have never seen her so engaged.  Otherwise it is static and pale and IMO totally uninteresting.  She may think that I am hard to fathom, but peeps are a mysterious lot.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

10 December 2014 - I am not shunning the pretty packages; I am avoiding eye contact... because a tangle of ribbon is one of my weaknesses.  It is a good thing, I think, to know one's shortcomings.  Such a list prevents a swelled head, a not-so-gentle reminder that one alas is not perfect, and it also helps one avoid those environments where these, I don't know, "flaws" seems like such a judgmental word, might get one into trouble.  So I am trying to be well-behaved, a reasonable plan two weeks before you-know-who shows up.

9 December 2014 - I am amazed at how photogenic I am...not that I seek out this self-aggrandizement.  The camera belongs to the shorter peep, and she seems to have it ever at the ready.  To her credit she has never once asked me to say "cheese"... because she knows better.  It is enough that I tolerate these intrusions into what otherwise was quality minding-my-own-business time.  If there is a lesson captured in this picture, it is that gloomy weather should be waited out in an amenable lap.  But this particular one is taken.
