indulge me

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

7 December 2020 - Most of the time there is nothing special about this corner.  However, since our temperatures have dropped, I have made a marvelous discovery:  warm air flows from this wall!  I am not sure if my peeps are aware of the leak... they haven't parked themselves here, as I unashamedly do.  The wooden floor adjacent to the emanation heats up nicely, and my chilly paws are much appreciative.  It isn't the only spot in our abode:  the refrigerator kickplate (but in a high-traffic area), the computer monitor (with annoying static electricity), my bed's heating pad (requires tending by the shorter peep), plus those areas graced by the sun.  Of course I am suspicious of benevolence... but so far I haven't detected a sulfurous smell.

... few are frozen

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

6 December 2020 - This is the month, I've noticed, to wish peace, joy, health, happiness, etc. to friends and family.  My version would be that you find yourself in a warm patch of sunshine.  Unfortunately it is a transient thing, always on the move... which isn't entirely bad:  I might be tempted to execute all my duties from this bright corner.  However, in making my rounds, I have noticed that there are other spots so blessed.  To maximize my toastiness I only need to draw up a schedule that puts me in the right place at the right time.  It is easier to achieve the opposite (wrong place, wrong time), but on these nippy mornings I am extremely motivated.

5 December 2020 - My job has its aggravations:  one minute I am relaxing, preening my fur, and the next minute a twig snaps.  What caused that noise?  Unfortunately for me it can't be a rhetorical question, and I must check it out.  Most of the time, of course, it is nothing... but I dare not allow the one that spells trouble to go unchallenged.  If my hearing were not so keen, I could have honestly stood before Bastet and denied negligence.  But in the balance I would not trade any of my heightened senses for a few extra minutes of relaxation.  So if you think my life is cushy, or pooh-pooh my world-weary expression, don't be so hasty to dismiss.

a noise for business

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

4 November 2020 - I have decided to refrain (I will not be issuing any tra-la-las) from weather complaints today... besides, yesterday afternoon I was able to romp in the screened area, without wearing a purrka.  For some reason there has been lots of activity at our front portal, commotion that even the peeps notice and check out.  They return with boxes in their arms... and I am naturally suspicious.  Are these packages from Acme Company?  Need I paint a cave door on a wall, and hide?  So what better place to isolate myself than the office on a Friday?  It also is the furthest level from the busy intersection... a useful observation I filed away when making my rounds.  If it weren't so far and so reputedly arctic, I might strike out for the North Pole.

all my joy

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

3 December 2020 - I didn't know Hap Kliban, or closer to home, Don Nedobeck, but both of these peeps understood the feline form.  Their drawings capture our sleek lines and undulating curves.  If they didn't coin the phrase "fat cat", they certainly visualized the image.  And of course those two words don't just suggest the state of being "well fed" but also our confidence in bearing and being.  Even now, almost six months after moving into this household, I have my skittish moments... but at the core of every feline, waiting to be expressed, is a pride (how apt a collective noun) in who we are and in our divine lineage.  I remind myself that the descendent of Bastet shouldn't hide under the bed - unless it is part of the greater plan (of which I am told very little).  Even among cats there is a hierarchy, and I am fairly low on the scratching pole.

many are cold...

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

2 December 2020 - It is my understanding that lots of peeps, once fall has failed them, head south for the winter. I would suggest a destination beyond our 24° latitude, as we are having another day of chill.  The sun is trying mightily, and if one is lucky enough to find a patch of its warmth he should claim it until nightfall.  Lying in bed seems enticingly decadent, but it is also boring... so I am alternating between snoozes and speeding around the premises (no reason to dally).  By periodically vacating the provided towel I give the shorter peep a chance to reheat it in the microwave.  And I have filed away that beeping sound as a good reason to hustle back to my nap space.  I am also trying, without much success, to guide my dreams toward the steamy jungle.

unhappy days

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

1 December 2020 - Let me just say that I am counting the hours to summer.  I loathe this downturn in temperatures, and have become quite the slug-a-bed... not because I am sleepy, but because I have little motivation to leave a warm spot.  I noticed my peeps weren't quick to rise this morning either, so without discussing our respective misery we concur.  I will admit prior to this arrival of arctic air, we were smug in enjoyment... which makes the present circumstances all the more distasteful and physically uncomfortable.  I predict a sharp decline in photo-worthy hijinks.  If you happen to be a fan of my escapades, perhaps you could pester the weather gods to turn up the thermostat.
