peril harbor

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

31 Aug 2026 - Periodically this hulking object becomes another miniature sol in a box.  The generated heat is short-lived, and situated in this corner of the outdoors has little effect on surrounding temperatures.  Mainly its use to me is something under which I can lie while keeping a watch for interlopers.  I don't trouble myself wondering if those three spindly legs will hold up that hulking mass, and trust my quick reflexes will prevent any possible harm.  I suspect those large beeps floating past could do me more injury.

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 Aug 2026 - I guess "it fainted" isn't a plausible story:  maybe "feinted" is closer to what transpired between me and the pillow.  The short story is that I hopped onto this office chair and made myself comfortable.  This spot has become the unofficial manager's cubicle, where I can watch my two peeps hard at work, or at least occupied with their thoughts.  Situated to one side, it doesn't intrude into their space or interfere with their business.  The taller one seems to like the late shift, so I can join him once Mr. Sol has dropped behind the trees... a rather nice arrangement, almost planned.

29 Aug 2026 - As office manager I would be the one blamed for failure to dot all the Is, so I do like to oversee and approve my peeps' work.  I don't profess to understand the complexity of their jobs (my forte is not the technical stuff), but I have a good eye for final product, what sort of first impression it will make.  Naturally I leave to them the debugging.  I'll assist if it is the real six- or eight-legged thing, but otherwise I trust their ability to root out flawed logic.  We each respect the other's strengths, and acknowledge that a single individual can't be good at everything.

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 Aug 2026 - My ears don't miss much, even if it's the shorter peep trying to sneak a peek from another room.  And before you comment "isn't that where you were yesterday?", I will point out that my body's orientation differs by 180°... because I don't want to be predictable, comfy but not predictable.  Lying next to this screen portal I can literally taste the wind.  Granted, my nose seldom registers a surprise, but as you know I truly don't like surprises, so all is good here in my personal sun room.  Acknowledgment of Mr. Sol's good job, at least in my short-term memory, is in order.

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 Aug 2026 - To position my black coat toward the afternoon light is a sure way to warm up, and sometimes that wish beats out the need to watch for interlopers.  Besides, even with my eyes closed, the ears are listening for any stealthy noise.  And what a peaceful rest can be had with just the sound of stirring trees!  When Mr. Sol dips low enough to peer through the understory, I know it is time to stir, time to dawdle near my empty food bowl.  My line of work burns up calories, and I eagerly anticipate that last serving of my daily fare.

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 Aug 2026 - Being a cat I am curious (nosy my peeps would say), and what has my two's attention must be investigated... if for no other reason than wishing to steal back some of that attention.  Their food doesn't pass the sniff test, and their fascination with scratches on paper is beyond me.  Even so that niggling voice of "what are they up to?" can't be silenced.  One consolation to all their boring activities is that there is often a lap to be had, a lap that stays put maybe for the duration of an all-too-brief catnap.

me thinks

Shamus on view
Me-usings and Me-emories

25 Aug 2026 - I do love my routine, but every now and then I get the urge (because it certainly isn't thought out) to do something different.  For predictable me, "different" doesn't need to be earth-rattling or unique.  For example, I can't recall if/when I hopped onto this deck chair, but why not audition it?  It had a few things on the plus side, but sorely (as in "ouch" my contact points) suffered from no cushion.  I am certain there is padding when my two peeps sit here, but not today.  My adventure concluded, I happily return to the usual.

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 Aug 2026 - "Shamus the purrer sat it the corner?"  Evidently I like this spot in my personal sun room, and would like it even more if a cushion were provided.  Mr. Sol favors this side of our domicile, so if he decides to show his face, this room can be quite toasty, my idea of perfect, especially on a day that is sunny but not sufficiently warm.  And beyond these milky portals parades all manner of interlopers.  Maybe from here I am as indistinct to them as they are to me, certainly my stop-'em-dead glare is blocked.

the essentials

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 Aug 2026 - On those mornings when Mr. Sol is slow to arrive, I feel no rush to begin my day.  The interlopers don't favor bad weather, giving me the appreciated option of hitting the snooze button.  When the shorter peep thinks it's time to rise, then so will I... but until then, I'll catnap or spruce up the coat or file my nails.  An on-call life requires one to shoehorn in secondary, but even so important, chores when presented with a few idle moments.  The strategy serves me well and keeps me perky and looking good.

deep breath

Shamus on view
Me-usings and Me-emories

22 Aug 2026 - An excursion outdoors is highly recommended.  One doesn't have to venture far to reap the benefits of viewing a natural horizon, of breathing pine-scented air.  My time on the personal screened deck is a highlight to my day, and weather that cancels R&R out there above the big water is not appreciated.  Problems that loom large inside four walls are shrunk to small matters when aired beneath that big dome of blue... so small we are, how petty our complaints, how laughable our ambitions, when scaled to the universe.  I'm very relieved to know that my responsibilities cover such a teeny fracture of that space.

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 Aug 2026 - It is "finders, keepers"... until the "owner" comes along to claim it.  You are very aware, through my ramblings, that I have many places at which to grab a nap.  So when one becomes unavailable, or too noisy for my ears, I have no problem, after a wee bit of grousing, relocating to something equally suited.  But each chosen spot has something, or several, to recommend it, even when they all are comfy and offer visuals of the surrounding area.  The shorter peep and I agree that this particular cushion is reason enough for pausing (pawsing?) to rest.

20 Aug 2026 - What could be better than a chin chuck?  My imagination fails me.  And I could sit there forever, but in reality I must be content with whatever time the shorter peep allocates (always too short).  It is most appreciated, and afterwards I am invigorated, ready to take on any and all interlopers.  I don't understand the mechanism that causes some sensory stimulation to be so pleasurable and others so-so, even undesirable.  But what is clear is that the inarticulate part of my brain, for whatever reason, likes chin chucks.

follow the trail

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

19 Aug 2026 - None of the interlopers I deal with here in the hinterland have a stride of that length, and my peeps' paws are many times larger... so maybe it was moi who walked across the bed??  Typically if I wish to cross from one side to the other, I duck underneath, but that isn't always the case.  Sometimes I hop up and take a stroll... I've noticed that above does offer better site lines.  But the decision is hardly that:  I just find myself on the top side and not even wondering why.  I have my mission, and my brain is busy enough processing all the sensory input.
