it's complicated

7 Jan 2024 - "Still Life with Cat" could be the name of this picture.  Most of the time I would not be lumped with "still life" as I often have the urge to zip around the domicile... but I can also convincingly play the role of a lump when I want to.  Unless the shorter peep becomes a videographer, you will only be treated to the sedate version of myself.  Actually having the interlopers see me as mobile and dangerous as a piece of furniture could aid my sneaking up on them... so feel free to spread the misinformation.

6 Jan 2024 - If you can't tell, I'm the one without any legs... or at least no visible legs.  Of course I thankfully have four workable limbs, as well as a tail to wrap around chilly paws.  This pictured understructure is a prime hiding spot for interlopers (and myself as well if I'm eluding my peeps).  But today my concern is what lies outside the portal, just beyond our domicile walls.  There has been a persistent thud on the glass that probably is the crazed beep... but I won't cease my vigilance until I've actually seen it swooping in.

5 Jan 2024 - A cat's sense of smell is truly an asset, but it also can be an annoying distraction.  Imagine this scenario:  I am hiding from the shorter peep, stealthily watching her nearby movement... and then my nose catches a whiff of something interesting and breaks my concentration and spoils my stakeout.  Yes, the sort of annoying one can't control because it is hard-wired.  I am sure that our olfactory abilities served my ancestors well, kept them alive sufficiently long that I could be here.  But "modern times" are a totally different environment, not without hazards certainly, but needing a different sort of strategy.

4 Jan 2024 - My peeps are good at interrupting me:  patting my head while I'm napping, popping the lid of a cat-food can when I'm out on my personal screened porch, entering a room when I'm on my way out.  I'm not an hourly earner, so a delay here, a delay there, just means that I'm done with my work later than was absolutely necessary.  You might think, "and what else would you be doing with your leisure time?"  That isn't the point:  I like to be the one who decides where and when.

3 Jan 2024 - My job isn't boring, as the interlopers keep me on my tippy-toes.  For some reason the beeps favor this particular portal, so I pass by numerous times during the day to check on their activity.  Mostly they flit in and out of the nearby bushes, but sometimes, as in the picture to the right, one takes offense and attacks the glass.  What provokes it I don't know:  maybe it can see me looking out?  It is such a tiny threat that I am really there for the entertainment.

2 Jan 2024 - I am expecting another day of promise, and hope the same for you.  Even if my extremities are chilly, I am delighted to see Mr. Sol beyond the portal.  It appears the beeps think similarly, as their activity likewise picks up in the glorious sunshine.  This time of year the peregrinations of my work have an added benefit:  with all that walking the beat, my heart spreads warmth from head to haunches.  It isn't necessarily a perk when the ambient temperatures are close to that of my body, but on days like today I am especially glad not to be cold-blooded.

1 Jan 2024 - Was your neighborhood as noisy as ours last night?  The din was unlike anything made by the local interlopers, so I suspect unruly peeps were the culprit.  The shorter peep and I tried to ignore the hullabaloo, and I managed to catnap until the assault finally ceased.  We early risers should have returned the wake-up call, but it just isn't my style of retribution.  Besides I can always get some shuteye later today, and already Mr. Sol's arrival has brightened my spirits.
