behold 'em

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

14 Jan 2024 - When Mr. Sol fails me, I visit the local oracle.  I have tried to put words to her low hiss, but mostly it isn't the advice I'm seeking but her warm breath.  I step into the circle, back to (one shouldn't stare at the divine), and let the breeze ruffle my fur.  The air, even the floor, in her vicinity, defies the chill and offers my cold paws a delightful place to pause.  She asks little of me in return (what could I possibly leave at the altar but kibble?)... but I gratefully offer a bit of heart-felt appreciation.

"I'm MEL-ting"

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

13 Jan 2024 - I am not a cube of sugar (or pillar of salt) that dissolves in liquid, but even so I don't care to be sopping wet.  A few rain sprinkles are no big deal, but I wouldn't tolerate a baptism.  Yesterday's time on my personal screened porch was odd, in that I could feel the moisture around my body but I couldn't see individual droplets.  The air was heavy, even thick, and I came back into the domicile damp from its contact.  It wasn't pleasant nor unpleasant, just unusual.  Even the views from the porch were milky, the colors softened, sounds muted.  At least you can still see that I'm a tuxedo cat.

all in a day's work

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

12 Jan 2024 - Stealth and shadows are natural partners:  I myself use these darkened spots when I am undercover, and likewise do the interlopers.  That a cat's eyesight functions well in dim light is a true asset... how else could I spot the tiny creatures (so small they don't warrant a designation) that lurk here, in areas not disturbed by the peeps... but I have no qualms about upsetting their utopias.  Some of them are tasty morsels, others are just fun to chase.  I get the job done.

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

11 Jan 2024 - Such sharp light isn't always Mr. Sol's demeanor, so when I find a glowing patch I take advantage of it, schedule a work break, and plop down in its warmth.  This spontaneity counters any notion you might have of my being inflexible:  I can make an exception if such is warranted.  Look how distinct my shadow is upon the floor:  one might guess it belongs to me just by that truncated ear.  Although it renders my face asymmetrical, I can't say that the loss of surface area has noticeably diminished my hearing... why, sometimes I hear things that aren't even there!

juvenile retention

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

10 Jan 2024 - My kittenhood is in the rear-view mirror, and even when I was a tyke I wasn't the foolish, boisterous sort featured in much-watched videos.  So my relationship with toys, be they stuffed or feathered or tethered to a string, is very minimal.  I have a more than adequate collection of these diversions, some of them carry-overs from previous feline occupants (or so my nose tells me).  In an uncommon moment something may come over me, and I bat a toy across the floor or carry it into another room... but then sobriety asserts itself, and the silliness ends.

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

9 Jan 2024 - It is gratifying, even for a cat, to feel useful.  Certainly my work is never done, but there are small victories that feed my devotion to the job.  It may in fact be the same individuals that I see day after day at the westerly portal, but strange or familiar they are given reason to "move along".  Lessons often have to be repeated, but that is more a reflection on the student and its absolute determination to do its own thing.  How much more effective I would be as a teacher if there was not this separating glass!

in the groove

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

8 Jan 2024 - You may not have noticed, but more typically I favor the other pillow... but for whatever reason (perhaps the nearness of my stuffed toy, maybe the glow of Mr. Sol) I decided to nap here.  Either spot is comfortable, with only the slightest difference in views... yet I am, as you are as well, a creature of habit.  Interlopers are seldom found in this area (out the portals, yes), however I don't want word to leak out that I am predictable.  Mixing up my routine is essential for the job, despite the fact that I am not fond of change.
