Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 May 2016 - Ever have a morning when your image is sharper than you?  We typically blame it on extenuating circumstances...so I will point the paw at Monday morning.  Even though it is a peep holiday, a cat soldiers on.  My responsibilities know no cessation (but that is called job security... now if it only paid a little better).  However I am my own boss, and he is tolerant of my lying down on the job and sleeping at my desk.  Let us say that I am not looking for other employment.

29 May 2016 - For a creature that doesn't care for water recreations of any sort, I still need this clear liquid to slake my thirst.  And there is no better water than that which flows from a faucet.  The trick is getting it turned on.  I have had to resort to napping on the adjacent counter, just to catch the attention of a passing peep.  As sleeping spots, it isn't my favorite (or least):  I appreciate its elevation, although the provided bedding is woefully thin...but I don't want to confuse my peeps with two requests when H2O is my primary goal.

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 May 2016 - I have chosen my new spot:  at the top of the stairs leading to the office.  It is the only exit/egress to this level, so I am the gatekeeper, aware of all the comings and goings.  Since my peeps spend considerable time at their respective desks, my post keeps me nearby and able to guard their backs.  My vigilance is yet another example of my quiet, and often unnoticed, service to my peeps...not that I am overly complaining.  I have to nap somewhere, so it might as well be where I can be of use.

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 May 2016 - No cat is an island... unfortunately.  We have to share our space with others of our kind, with peeps, with <shudder> dim-deeps.  Most felines are introverts, are single players, which makes all this elbow-rubbing particularly annoying.  But there isn't much that one can do about the situation, except grouse.  Well, that isn't totally true:  one must grab those opportunities to be alone, and enjoy them especially because of their rarity.  To have an overabundance of something is to not appreciate it, so perhaps it is fortunate that these quiet moments are scarce:  the better to savor them fully.

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 May 2016 - There is little a cat dislikes more than predictability.  I realize that my peeps expect me to hop up in this unoccupied chair...it is after all higher than my current position.  But I like to keep things fresh, so in this instance I have elected to remain put.  A recent trip to the odious vet offers another case:  because I am of a certain age and a nodule on my thyroid gland was noticed for the first time, I must have hyperthroidism.  But my blood nixed that idea:  even in my core I don't like to satisfy expectations.  But there is a line across which contrariness becomes, you guessed it, predictable.  I strive for randomness.

24 May 2016 - This alien cube showed up a little over twenty-four hours ago, and I am still doing recon.  So far no sinister actions have been detected, although somehow my stuffed toys have been ingested.  They haven't been torn to shreds or otherwise damaged, but a rescue mission still seems ill-advised.  I have put a paw, actually two, inside a portal, and was able to withdraw them without incident.  There is a residual odor, however, that underscores my vigilance:  has one of my kind tangled with this thing in the near past?  I will continue to cautiously monitor the situation, and report back when warranted.

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 May 2016 - Do I have a yellow aura?  And if so, why is it shaped like a dunce cap?  I make no claims to being special, although my peeps insist that I am...perhaps that is why we get along so well.  In this I am only partly joking:  a friendship is sustained by graciousness on both sides.  Who wants to waste significant amounts of time with someone who calls you Porky or Stoopid?  The peeps and I do not diminish one another, not even shortening one another's names... besides, seriously, do I look like a Cal?

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

22 May 2016 - It is how one conducts oneself when no one is watching that defines character.  I have many responsibilities and no overseer...nor is one needed, as I know what needs to be done and do it.  That I am also able to take naps is solid evidence that I manage my time well.  On patrol I have brought to the peeps' attention numerous critters that needed to be relocated outside.  I also hear the delivery truck long before the doorbell rings, and I give ample warning of thunder in the distance.  I like to think that my contributions make a difference, but regardless I do my job.

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 May 2016 - Multiple views often help clarify, even assure one.  What looks at first glance to be a closed fist, ready to strike, can soften into an extended hand.  And how differently the situation would have progressed if you had reacted to that initial impression by presenting your own balled-up fist.  That is certainly how conflicts begin.  How much better for all concerned if a few intervening breaths are taken, allowing some time to make/take a second and third impression.  In my case one sees pink toes, a very low level of threat even in today's hyper-fearful society.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

20 May 2016 - "Tosh" on the poetic notion of "little cat feet".  This picture makes it appear that I am wearing a boxing glove, but it is just my furry mitten.  With claws extended my fist is much more intimidating.  But I assure you that I am just a big softy...unless cornered or frightened, which is true for any creature smarter than a slug.  We cats do this kneading thing with our feet, harkening back to our kitten days, in which we gently push/pull with our claws.  The shorter peep calls this behavior "pitty-pat", a word that I find mushy and shan't mention again.  At least she doesn't resort to infantile talk...then I might be forced to bop her in the nose.

19 May 2016 - It is getting a tad warm for frequenting laps, but I am willing to put up with the discomfort for half a minute if it makes my peep happy.  It was her idea after all, so I am briefly obliging.  Those that believe we cats are an uncaring breed, simply haven't spent enough time around us.  We may not wash your face or turn back flips when you enter the room, but hopefully neither does your best friend.  Whose ego needs a constant dose of groveling?  I would find such fawning distasteful and, frankly, embarrassing.  If I desire drama, I'll go to the theater; if I need a soap opera, I'll turn on afternoon TV.  I see nothing wrong with quiet companionship.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

18 May 2016 - I can not recommend sleep enough.  The nap-deprived are easy to spot:  slow-witted, puffy-eyed, cranky.  Yet this suspension of consciousness is not well understood.  How exactly do we enter this relaxed and inactive state?  One sure way to remain awake is to worry about this question's answer.  One has to allow weariness to quiet the brain as well as the body.  I suppose that is why some count sheep or breaths:  it keeps the gray matter busy with a dulling task.  We cats obviously excel at this necessary pastime.  Kick off your shoes, and join us.

Me-usings and Me-emories

17 May 2016 - As near as I can tell, I don't have nostril bristles, but otherwise I am a hirsute fellow.  Hairs sprout from my ears and whiskers from my brow and cheeks and chin...all the better to discern my immediate surroundings.  Actually my nose has the least fur of anywhere on my body, covered by a short-nap of velvety hairs.  But then having a bushy nose would require cleaning every time that I ate...so it seems an insightful bit of design.  I would take offense that no one of my kind has his handsome profile gracing a coin or dollar bill, but we cats don't have much use for money.
