steady as she goes

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

8 March 2018 - And what will today bring?  The answer, or the wish to not know the answer, can keep us in our beds... where at least it is warm.  And then there is the hope that something can be salvaged from a bad start, counterbalanced by the foolishness of "it can't get any worse".  Oh, yes, that notion is laughable and marks the speaker as totally naive, as in "buy that fella a clue".  But we are an optimistic lot:  things will work out.. and typically they do, but just not in the way we had thought or planned.  So, whaddya gonna do?  Rise and shine... if not for my benefit then for my peeps'.

the thawing of relations

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

7 March 2018 - Today's challenge is "can you do this?"  Part of my unofficial role in our household is to set a healthy example for my peeps... in particular how to handle stress.  An anxious cat is one looking for a way out of the chaos.  We do not remain in harmful situations unless the exit is barred (and warning:  you do not want to be the one blocking the door).  Even our body hum is soothing to the listener, and can calm a quickened pulse and lengthen the breath.  Without the papers to attest it, each of my kind is an "emotional support animal"... granted, some better at the task than others.  So give it a try:  sprawl in a sunny patch and observe your bones melt.

6 March 2018 - Although I am lying down on the job, you can't help noticw the intensity of my vigil, muscles clinched to spring.  When my brain is flooded with testosterone, I forget that there is a screen separating me from the interloper.  It would probably yield to my attack... but then the peeps would expect explanation and justification ("why couldn't you exit using your door??").  Let us say that reason prevailed.  But the intruder was subjected to an intense glare that will make it think twice about returning.  I consider that a win, wouldn't you?

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

5 March 2018 - To maintain a healthy body, one needs to stay hydrated.  That isn't too difficult for most of the year, but once temperatures, humidity, and exertion conspire to produce sweat, then more water intake is necessary.  We cats dissipate heat most effectively through the pads of our feet, and pant only when that proves inadequate.  So a panting cat is one that is in distress.  But I can't recall ever being too warm, in fact my peeps will tell you that my major complaint (ok, one of my major) is that I am cold.  But even in chilly weather I get a dry mouth, and as you know the tastiest water in our house flows straight from the faucet.

showy time

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

4 March 2018 - Each of us can only hope to bring inspiration to others.  Having even a small impact makes life more worthwhile and cancels out in large measure all the ugly/undesirable stuff that happens.  Often we go on our way unaware of the seed that has been planted in a student, a colleague, a friend, even a stranger.  How delighted was I when a peep of my peeps sent this photo along.  She says it is me.  I realize that my vision and peep vision differ considerably, but this is not how I picture myself.  In fact I am fairly certain that these colors do not even have names in cat language.

more's the pity

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

3 March 2018 - Two steps forward, one step back:  this morning was a tad disappointing.  All the strides we had made toward full-blown summer, and now we are once again dealing with chilly weather.  What happened?  And more importantly, when will it go away?  I can't tell you how glad I am to have a sunny square in which to lie.  Without this bit of sheltered warmth, I would be wretched... and when the cat in the house is unhappy, everyone who isn't deaf knows it.

transi-story

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

2 March 2018 - I am delighted with our current weather trend, inviting me to linger outdoors.  I make my rounds, even when it is frosty... although certainly I do not linger.  But how pleasant to saunter through our space, truly paying attention to the details.  Leaves are falling by the barrowful, threatening to bury the trail my nose is following... but I am good at my job.  Some nocturnal creature has led me to the pond perimeter, where it probably stared intently at an unreachable meal of goldfish before settling on a drink of water from the fountain.  I find these ephemeral passages quite fascinating.
