the rest is history

7 Aug 2022 - You have to like a piece of furniture that is comfy, granting nap-time use as well as a hiding place below.  This spot isn't usually occupied by a peep, so there is no competition, and it gives me convenient surveillance of my personal deck.  Now that the sharing of body heat is less necessary, I sometimes spend the dark hours here, varying my orientation from clockwise to counterclockwise (as pictured here).  I'm fairly certain I wouldn't dare relax so close to Mr. Sol's black box, however he vacated the space eons ago... but I do keep an eye out, just the same.

6 Aug 2022 - My two peeps spend hours, holding and stroking these heavy, squat cubes.  I have found them handy to sit upon, sturdy and broad-based, but otherwise the fascination is a mystery to me.  The odor detected is a scent all its own, but otherwise not special, certainly not worthy of fixation.  Perhaps I should stop hoping for additional commonality between our two species.  We each have our likes and dislikes, and the need to explain ourselves to the other is unnecessary.  It should be ample consolation that I'm the only one in the domicile fond of kibble.

5 Aug 2022 - I have no experience with little peeps, but the big variety do not willingly bend their knees.  This factoid underpins many of my hiding choices (that and the truth that I am not a jumper).  One or the other can pass right by me, unaware that I'm hunkered down, watching where the next foot will land (not on me being the point).  It is rather fun to bolt from my spot, and startle the passerby... admittedly the older my two get, the less I should get my jollies in this manner.  But youth often acts, and then analyzes implications later.  I like to think that I'm helping keep my peeps mentally sharp.

slug it out

Me-usings and Me-emories

4 Aug 2022 - Oh, the cat days of August!  It is very hard to remain productive when one's brains and bones have been softened by sunshine... and, as the manager, I relax office standards accordingly.  Even in my duties as protector of the domicile, I find myself daydreaming in the bright light, quite forgetting to scan for interlopers.  But to know this tendency is to guard against its distraction, so I am able to snap my focus back to our vulnerable perimeter, to keep my head in the game.  The energy that is consumed in refraining from the easy path is not insignificant.

all hale, the purrer

Me-usings and Me-emories

3 Aug 2022 - I probably don't drink enough water.  This admission may sound odd, but stopping by my bowl is hard to remember... as well as an interruption to a busy schedule.  We cats aren't big sweaters, and certainly here in my northern domicile, where the sunlight always seems to strike a glancing blow, there is no need to cool the body down.  But fluid is nonetheless lost, and needs to be replenished.  It is probably fortuitous that my feeding station is at the office, where I must pop in from time to time to "manage" productivity and morale.  While encouraging the staff to hone in on the task, should I be seen loitering at the water cooler?

fulfill 'er up

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

2 Aug 2022 - It would be wrong to think that we cats don't care about our appearance.  All that grooming has a practical explanation, of course, but we favor a neat and tidy look... so long after a reasonable standard of cleanliness is reached, we continue to wash and scrub.  If we didn't have such an aversion to clothes, we probably wouldn't mind sporting something trendy in a flattering color.  I realize (although can't bring myself to do it) that a pert red bow tie would look sharp around my neck.  What is less offensive is to pose before a complimenting background.

31 Jul 2022 - Aah, the great outdoors... for me that means exhilaration at being "out there".  "Great" as a sense of vastness isn't my experience, for which my peeps are largely responsible.  And frankly a huge expanse is a scary concept to me:  how do I negotiate an area saturated with unknown dangers and bigger interlopers, with no screen or glass (or wall) separating us?  A healthy sense of vulnerability keeps my paws in full contact with the familiar.  The twists and turns of our domicile I could patrol with my eyes closed, every corner is a known quantity... and I sleep better in this knowledge.
