Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

31 July 2018 - If the picture to the right were rotated ninety degrees counter-clockwise (or if the viewer tilted her head to the right), then the brain's interpretation might be different... rather like Astaire, in Royal Wedding, dancing on the walls and ceiling.  I don't soft-shoe, and rarely cavort, but I am a pro at lounging.  From this orientation I can scan the underside of the deck roof and the azure sky.  It is not impossible (and hence my vigilance) that a parachutist could touch down in our front yard (but he's more likely to get hung up in the trees).

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 July 2018 - Where would I be without the help of my nose?  It is my guide home, my alert system, my tracking device.  Now that my peeps have inadvertently made it easier for an assault by sea, I must keep an extra-sharp eye on the eastern flank.  I am picking up a medley of smells on our lakeside doorstep:  a dose of squeep, a hint of beep, perhaps a soupรงon of cheep... nothing out of the ordinary in the mix.  It is, bottom line, my job, and one can never be lax in these important matters... an ounce of purrvention and all that.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

29 July 2018 - Sometimes having lots of choices is not a good thing... rather like the bewildering array on the cereal aisle:  if Cat'n Crunch was the only option, time and energy would be conserved.  So perhaps you can understand how tiring my day can be:  do I lie here on the glider or the handy bench or that special deck corner or in the sun room or? ...the list goes on.  Granted my dilemma is a furry-world problem, but it is my reality.  The bed at hand is worth two in... well, I'm bushed.  Right here will have to do.

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 July 2018 - I wouldn't call it pea-soup... perhaps clam chowder?  Today is a study in grays, favoring the pale end of that color.  But it isn't a wash-out, meaning no precipitation currently (the clouds emptied overnight).  The mist obscures sound as well, so it is strangely, almost eerily, quiet (of course who would choose to water-ski today?).  But the temperature is acceptable, so stretching out on the deck seems a good use of my time, and under the roof in case the prediction is inaccurate.  From this vantage I can still watch our eastern and northern flanks (i.e., I'm not 100% idle).

26 July 2018 - "Go to jail.  Do not pass Go.  Do not collect $200."  I am not familiar with the shorter peep's so-she-thinks hilarious quote, but I am quite content here on my towel,  in the fresh air.  Certainly no one has forced me to lie in this spot... I found it, and I choose when I wish to be there (I have many desirable places from which to purrsue my nap).  And what would a cat need money for?  Without pockets, shoulder bag, or backpack (don't get any ideas, peeps), I have nowhere to stash the loot... besides, my room and board are provided (aren't I the lucky one).

25 July 2018 - All that is needed is a beach towel and sandy paws to imagine I'm on vacation.  And this vacation is tailor-made, as I don't have to go anywhere for my R&R (you know how I hate to travel).  My peeps have been joining me on the deck more regularly, now that the temperatures have plateaued at their summer highs.  We do little:  take in the view, marvel at the quiet.  A culture that recognizes the value of a siesta is the height of civilized (and gets my purrsonal endorsement).

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 July 2018 - Two days ago began the dim-deep days of summer, although forty-eight hours ago I would not have used the term "hot"... but definitely "sultry" is the word that comes to mind.  It would take something akin to the ovens of hell to provoke a cat to pant, such undignified behavior... and we are not even close to such conditions.  However the locals are sweating copiously and complaining, between their salty drips, of the god-awful stickiness.  They should try existence while wearing a black fur coat!  What to do when the air is heavy?  That one is easy:  lie down in a patch of shade.

when in doubt

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 July 2018 - To be well-grounded is to be certain of oneself, of one's abilities, of one's reasoning.  We cats excel at this particular trait, which may explain why we are so adept at landing on our feet.  One has to be circumspect however when presented with counter-information, e.g. a house fire...  surely our noses would detect such a thing, but perhaps we should reevaluate the situation from a safe distance.  Or to be told that the house is listing... nope, no way... I think that I would be aware if I was on the verge of sliding to the left and onto the floor.

Me-usings and Me-emories

22 July 2018 - Seize the moment... because you never know when it might rain.  Not that I begrudge the locals a bit of precipitation, but I am rooting for Mr. Sol to scatter the clouds.  If I truly thought that I could influence the weather with my thoughts, I would be more careful with what I wished for.  But Mother Nature is as deaf to her children's pleadings as every other recognized deity.  Sometimes it seems that I am in the minority, but unlike many, I don't see forces at play when coincidence will suffice.

runt-of-the-mill

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 July 2018 - All of us can be mostly self-sufficient when we need to be, but, let's admit it, how much nicer it is when someone does it for us.  Not only is there the saved energy and avoided bother, but one also realizes that someone cares enough to make the effort, to take the time.  "I am worth it" is pure advertising spin, for in fact we aren't anything special (although our egos would vehemently disagree).  A colony of ants would put us to shame.  So be grateful for friendship, for acts of kindness, for selfless acts... and pass it on.

the eye of the storm

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

19 July 2018 - Early mornings are not a problem for me, as it is just a continuation of the night shift.  Before my peeps are up and active, I am patrolling the premises.  At our southern residence there is no two-if-by-sea option, so I am able to concentrate on all the ways that interlopers can sneak up via dry land.  But here my job is more diverse (and more interesting because of that).  Will the assault team swim in, come by rubber dinghy?  Might that soft lapping sound be caused by waves upon the rocks or by a kayak approaching the shore?  Call it my job security.

Me-usings and Me-emories

18 July 2018 - My peeps and I have a satisfying relationship, certainly as I see it and what could they possibly have to complain about?  I mostly am self-sufficient (although admittedly the can-opener and I are at odds), and keep myself entertained (with naps falling under that category).  But there are a few minutes of each day when companionship is needed (by both sides I wish to point out) and sought.  It is those times when I am glad to have such amiable mates.  How 'bout a high five!

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

17 July 2018 - Patrolling from the fire tower or the deck (or the office window) is good for mixing up one's surveillance, but nothing can beat paws on the ground.  Walking the yard's perimeter leaves an olfactory "no trespassing" warning, that the wise interloper should heed.  Plus I can read the tell-tale signs of the unwise, note their entry points, gauge the nature of their business (scarfing beep seeds, scouting out a winter residence, etc.), and modify my route and my tactics.  To be predictable is to be second-rate.
