aide in the shade

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 April 2019 - I have been spending more and more of my time outdoors... and it, and my time there, are great.  From the back porch I can survey our southern flank while basking in the soon-to-be-May sunshine.  Mostly I keep a watchful eye and attuned ear to the resident beeps, but occasionally I spot something more formidable shambling through our yard.  Some of the nosier ones actually have the gall, typically under the cover of darkness, to investigate my guardhouse... I know this to be true, not because I confronted the rogue, but because of the telltale scents left behind.  There is a reason for my longevity.

verum vex

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

29 April 2019 - My peeps had a big day yesterday, so I will grant them (ok, the shorter peep) an extra fifteen minutes this morning.  But that will be the extent of my generosity... because self-preservation has a higher priority, and I am thirsty.  While they slept, I walked the house, and am delighted to report that furniture is back in its proper place, although it will take days for the odor of strangers to be gone.  As I predicted, a horde of faces and feet descended on us Sunday, and I was forced to retreat to the bedroom (under the bed to be exact).  Quiet wasn't possible, but at least I had peace.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 April 2019 - What are my peeps up to now?  The lowest level of our domicile is unrecognizable to the eye, and even some of the smells are unfamiliar.... with a telltale eau-de-unknown-beast scent.  I have a bad feeling about their latest enterprise, and suspect that at some point I will have to excuse myself to the bedroom or perhaps even the wilderness yard.  Wondering when the next shoe will drop keeps me jumpy (even in the calmest times I dislike a sharp, loud noise) and pacing the floor...  making it difficult to work up an appetite or to enjoy a nap.  I must remain on the alert, and keep myself close to the backdoor exit.

mirror universe

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 April 2019 - Me and my pals are guarding the local watering hole.  Everyone, friend or foe, gets thirsty... which means eventually they must make their way to the faucet and wet their throats.  As my peeps will avow, I prefer my drink freshly flowing, rather than bowl-ready.  I do occasionally have to resort to the latter, and it certainly is a handy alternative, but it isn't my first choice.  A particularly heinous act is to poison the community well, carried out both by the residents (to enervate the approaching forces) and the aggressor (to force a demoralizing evacuation).  We cats are as territorial as the next, but I would never foul my water.

twiddle while you work

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 April 2019 - I really don't mind reporting to work.  My job as office manager gives me a great deal of autonomy and flexibility, which fits nicely with a cat's independent streak.  I can roam the corridors, under the pretense of staff supervision, curl up in a quiet corner, ostensibly giving my peeps room to work, take a long lunch, etc.  My largely paws-off style of oversight draws no complaints (comments, yes) from the employees, and productivity (and profits) are all in the black.. but what else would you expect with a tuxedo cat at the helm?

24 April 2019 - You might guess from the sharp white light that we are still enjoying low humidity with our warm temperatures.  There is a brief window in the spring and again in autumn when we in Florida are so lucky.  Unlike my peeps, I don't mind being sticky as long as I am toasty.  A month past the equinox, the sun has now lifted sufficiently high in the sky to pool on the north-facing porch... which means one of my favorite spots is even more desirable.  I am loving the current developments, with the promise of summer not too far away.

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 April 2019 - Geez, it would seem that I must keep a constant eye on the shorter peep.  She wandered off again, finally reappearing last night, smelling of foreign places.  Why she makes me and the taller peep worry so, is not understandable (and not appreciated either).  I must take solace in the "all's well that ends well" adage, and ignore the niggling notion that it will happen again.  But don't we cats pride ourselves in not fretting about the future?  I will enjoy the fact that she, and her lap, are back where they should be.  But anxiety certainly saps one's energy... it is no surprise that I require a restorative nap.

Me-ow-my-oh!

12 April 2019 - Walking about on little cat feet doesn't constitute being sneaky.  And who would appreciate someone clomping about at dawn anyway?  No, I am thoughtful of the taller peep, snoozing away... we guys have to stick together (and let sleeping dudes lie).  Although the shorter peep is a household singleton, she is a force not to be underestimated.  She and I are quite close, don't get me wrong.  But when things go out of kilter, me and the big guy have to sync our stories.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

11 April 2019 - I recommend the element of surprise.  If on-lookers expect to see you prone, eyes closed, then occasionally you should sit up and stare.  The often-drawn conclusion is that something is afoot, and your audience may likewise draw themselves more vertical, on the alert.  This attitude can be most beneficial in the workplace, as production levels increase with a ticking brain.  Mostly I do it just to watch the expressions on my peeps' faces... quite amusing and sufficient to make my day.  We cats favor droll humor:  it fits our sense of decorum and underscores our intelligence.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

10 April 2019 - To really blend in with my surroundings, I should stick leaves in my fur and flowers behind my ears... but the local interlopers really don't notice me when I sit stock-still.  I could be an inanimate object, a piece of porch furniture, and that is what I want them to think when I am doing reconnaissance.  There used to be a flap of screen in this corner that allowed me a quick exit to the yard, but now I must wander to the back door and wait for a peep to notice that I want out.  Perhaps the wildlife is aware that any threat I might pose is not imminent.  But I am very close to possessing "looks that kill"... then they better watch out.

9 April 2019 - You may conclude, when spotting me in the shadows, that it is a warm day.  I am just tromping about the property, insuring that the noisy peep interlopers who descended on us yesterday didn't do any permanent damage.  Actually they did inflict some changes on the grounds, but I will let my peeps decide if they are improvements.  Several felled trunks that were handy claw sharpeners have disappeared, and it seems to me that now more sunlight is penetrating the canopy... no complaints there.  Why any of this was important I can't say... obviously I didn't receive the memo.

8 April 2019 - Another Monday finds me hard at work (it takes quite a bit of concentration to nap while the office clatters/chatters).  I have gotten my charges on task, and can now just lie back and gently guide.  I like to think that I set the proper tone for the employees:  supportive but not intrusive, here if and only if they need me.  And we definitely need each other:  my head wants periodic patting, and their right brains benefit from usage.  I predict another productive week.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

7 April 2019 - Must I sing for my breakfast?  Mostly I just wait for the shorter peep to wander into the kitchen and prepare my meal.  Her mornings are not crowded with pressing matters, so I don't understand why things drag on as they do.  Rather than fret, I try to dredge up patience, a wearisome task.  Looking down on the world, at least a facsimile of it, helps me get priorities in perspective.  And you know how we cats like to be above it all, rightfully so.  I pass the interminable time by thinking retaliatory thoughts and muttering beneath my purr.  In the past I have lamented the absence of opposable thumbs... but I must admit to myself that I prefer being waited on.
