30 Jun 2024 - Sometimes, if Mr. Sol has taken a break, midday resembles the edges of the day:  dim light, pale sky, chilly temperatures.  But there is no fine print in my work contract that gives me a pass when the weather is suboptimal... so here I am, making the best of the situation, and hopefully being an aggravation to those interlopers.  Thankfully a few random patrols of my screened deck will be all that is required, and the remainder of my shift can be spent indoors, where there are cushions and artificial lighting.

a kind of hush

29 Jun 2024 - The day wanes, and our household grows quiet.  It would seem that we each have our preferred sitting spot, at least for this evening.  You know me:  I like to camp out near a window, so that I can watch the comings and goings of interlopers.  Its one disadvantage, there in the far corner of the room, is that I must quickly react (i.e., skedaddle) if I hear someone/thing at the front door... otherwise my exit is blocked (although, if necessary, I can warp-speed past the trespasser before they are even aware there's a cat in the house).

a sheltered life

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 Jun 2024 - My work life is all about adaptation.  When the air is nippy, I take a post behind glass to scan our surroundings.  I have realized that I am more vigilant on those areas flanked by the lake.  It is true that the view is more arresting when gazing out over the water, but does that mean it is favored by the interlopers?  And if they noticed my bias, would they assault the less-watched back-side?   In the past that has not been an issue... but in the future, who can say?  I suppose that I should adjust my patrol, periodically observing the sheltered forest... but I do like this view.

27 Jun 2024 - Every domicile has its out-of-the-way corners, secure spots sought out by a cat, tucked away in memory for those times when one needs to hide, to lay low until the danger passes.  Yesterday there were high-up noises, too loud to be made by the sort of interlopers I am in charge of managing.  When a matter arises outside my area of responsibility, I gladly (and quickly) acknowledge the peeps' jurisdiction... "let me know when it's safe to come out."

26 Jun 2024 - Even the hinterland needs an office, and I've chosen the window view.  I recall, on one of my stays, seeing a large brown creature snuffling around in the yard, just beyond this spot.  Way bigger than the typical interloper, and never spotted on my southerly beat, it eventually sauntered off into the woods... hopefully never to be seen again.  Even my two peeps were exclaiming (so it's not just my over-imagination).  I'm not certain how much, if any, income has been generated by the employees since our arrival, but you can't blame my management.

25 Jun 2024 - I know I heard a beep, but the rest of my senses can't corroborate... yet my ears don't lie.  What to make of this?  What is the deal?  Can something else, without feathers, without even a heartbeat, make that sound?  I have thoroughly searched the area, under and around, and I've noted that the shorter peep isn't registering an oddity (although there might be a smirk on her face), so I must reluctantly file this phenomenon under "unidentified"... and wait for its next occurrence, if there is one, to gather more information.

24 Jun 2024 - Peek-a-boo!  Curiosity is a powerful motivator:  it compels reticent me to push open a door, just to see what is going on behind it.  You can be certain that my body was primed to skedaddle, should there be a cat-eating ogre on the other side.  However I knew the shorter peep was in that space, and the logical side of me thought that she would not willingly keep company with such a monster... so the chance of a bad outcome was slim (but never zero).

23 Jun 2024 - Where am I in this picture?  Long gone!  On chilly mornings I have found that zooming around helps warm me up, so today, as I waited for breakfast to arrive, it was necessary to race in circles through our domicile.  Most of the floors here are hard, slippery surfaces on which I leave no trace, but making a fast, sweeping curve here at the deck portal ruffles the rug.  I could blame the squeep, but then it would reflect badly on my handling of the interlopers... so I'll put on my best cute and accept responsibility.

22 Jun 2024 - There are few things as relaxing as an outdoor bath.  If I choose the right moment of the right day, I can air-dry in a buttery pool of sunshine... even picturing it in my mind is enjoyable.  And you must admit the view from my personal deck is first-rate.  So far I've seen few peeps out on the water... certainly less than some years that prominently featured small, squealing peeps dragged behind a likewise noisy contraption.  Obviously I favor undisturbed quiet, if I can only get the interlopers to cooperate.

21 Jun 2024 - By morning's early light (at least early by peep standards) my kibble arrives.  I do wonder if I were not patiently waiting by my bowl if breakfast would be remembered.  Probably, since the shorter peep never forgets her first meal, but when is the question I don't care to pose.  After ending my fast (and leaving a few bits for later), I am primed to walk the beat with a saunter in my frame.  After the recent squeep invasion I am keeping a sharp eye on my personal deck.

hot on the heels

Me-usings and Me-emories

20 Jun 2024 - Forgive me while I daydream of yesterday's chase.  It began as a routine patrol of my personal deck, when an audacious squeep tried a shortcut.  Whether the ill-judged move was made in ignorance or derring-do, the intrusion demanded my response.  So I pursued the interloper round and round the space.  Speaking strictly for myself, a fine, if brief and certainly noisy, time was had.  The trespasser eventually found an exit and dashed to safety, smartly not to pull that stunt again.  I hope it repeats the story to friends and family.

19 Jun 2024 - Our hinterland abode doesn't typically beat out the southerly domicile in amenities... except "up here" I do have my very own cushioned window ledge.  True, most windows have sills upon which a narrow-hipped cat can perch, but as this photo underscores, here I can comfortably stretch out and gaze upon the wilderness beyond.  Yesterday the air temperature was such that I took a nap on my ledge, during a lull in interloper activity.  I especially like its elevation above the terrain, and like a tree house access is controlled... if only I had beep wings.

18 Jun 2024 - Look at all that sunshine that I'm walking away from!  But I have to check on the two peeps and patrol the interior, as much as I'd like to remain on my personal deck and bask.  I know my responsibilities, even when they lay heavy on my shoulders.  I also wish to acknowledge that occasionally my entry and exit is expedited by an open portal... I am still trying to discover the logic of when it is open and when it is closed, as knowing would somewhat lessen the frustration of finding my way blocked.
