a jury of his purrs

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

31 May 2015 - As you can see, I have been sprung (see 30 May 2015 entry for explanation).  I am not certain if charges were dropped or someone paid my bail, but freedom feels, smells, tastes wonderful.  A week ago, although intervening events make it seem more like a lifetime, I commented on the sinusoidal nature of life, and here I am back on top of the world...okay, okay, it literally is a refrigerator... having clawed my way out of a low point.  Why, there is even a curl in my tail!  We cats are resilient creatures, which is fortunate as sometimes our mettle is tested.  But all is forgiven:  the peeps and I are once again like peas in a pod, although I prefer "black beans" in the analogy.  Forgiven, yes, but not forgotten...they better not pull that stunt again any time soon.

it's all a misunderstanding

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 May 2015 - I wanted to put this photo out in the cloud before the peeps expunged the record of my recent mistreatment at their hands.  As you can see, I am behind bars, my cell barely large enough for me to stand up and turn around.  No water has been provided in hours, and the noise with which I am bombarded is enough to push me over the edge.  No charges have been filed, and I can't imagine my offense.  Unfortunately I have been treated in this manner before, so I am confident that I can survive if I remain calm.  Occasionally the shorter peep offers her fingers to scratch my head, and I am hopeful that my ordeal will soon end.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 May 2015 - It's hump day, and the office is quiet...which just means that it is too early for the taller peep.  Occasionally I get to sit on the throne, to feel how "uneasy lies the head that wears a crown".  Frankly I can't tolerate all that responsibility for very long...and the seat isn't that comfortable either.  My idea of governance is "live and let live", which probably is anathema to a die-hard capitalist.  But since I have nothing to sell, not even an idea, I am not looking to make a profit, and I sleep better at night for that very reason.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 May 2015 - We cats are very spatially aware, probably an instinct honed from aeons of predators and aggravated targets that would attack from above.   Consequently I haven't settled on whether this latest "toy" is friend or foe.  It makes an intriguing noise, like rustling reeds, when it flutters by, and its airy gyrations definitely have captured my attention.  But it could be suckering me up for a punch, so my continued caution is called for.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 May 2015 - The trick to keeping a smile on the ol' puss is to remember those days when you are sitting on top of the world.  Not every day will warrant that accolade, nor should it, but good times will carry you through the rough patches.  Should you wish to focus on the negative, the "poor me" moments, that is your choice...just remember that you have elected to be unhappy.  As for me, even the summation of nine lives is too short to waste on anything but pools of sunshine.

the things I have to do

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 May 2015 - We cats definitely enjoy sitting inside a box, but we are outside-the-box thinkers.  Here I am training the shorter peep (for some reason the taller peep is more resistant to my lessons) to open the back door when I peer into the bedroom window.  The only way this series of steps can be reinforced is by catching her in this part of the house and then getting her attention by hopping onto this cement pillar and rattling the window screen.  The first time this multi-step method occurred to me was quite an aha moment...it might even deserve to be copyrighted.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 May 2015 - The shorter peep draped this material over the railing just to cushion my perch...she is so thoughtful.  I know that I am not actually sitting atop a flying carpet, but we cats do possess fertile imaginations.  Looking down from this height makes it easy to pretend that I am soaring above the earth.  At this altitude I could bail out, if the magic falters, and survive.  Naturally I would land on four feet:  it is the way of the feline.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

22 May 2015 - I was totally unaware of the peeps' plans for me yesterday:  a visit to the vet.  Obviously I survived, but it was no fun.  The ordeal began with being stuffed in a shoulder bag...and my stomach promptly knotted up because I knew the destination.  This time, in addition to having my abdomen groped and my mouth pried open, I was stuck with a needle.  Although the peep in a white coat cooed over me and stroked my head, the rest of my treatment was deliberate cruelty if you ask me.  At times like these I seriously consider running away to the circus.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 May 2015 - I am not certain why my peeps place my dinner plate four feet off the floor...it isn't because there are other four-footed creatures in the house.  And at that height I am not prevented from eating, and they are very aware of that.  Perhaps they think that I have no self-control and require my bowl to be out of sight so I don't chow down indiscriminately ...but it is the taller peep that I am worried about.  There is some reason I am certain, but without a peep brain or a peep clue I may never know why.  It is a minor annoyance.

20 May 2015 - Want to accessorize your room?  I'm biased of course, but a cat is the perfect addition to any space.  We bring elegance and sophistication wherever we are, and our personalities can bling out the dullest of spots.  Unfortunately for some of you we also cause a histamine attack, so my proposed solution is not for everyone.  But should I be faulted for someone's overactive response?  You have to admit:  we do turn heads.

19 May 2015 - For all their many faults, my peeps are worth hanging onto.  For one thing, I really don't care to train new recruits...it is such an aggravating and slow process.  With occasional prompts and prods my two, after eleven years, know the routine.  Secondly, they are knowns.  Would their replacements be less stable, less reliable?  The spectre of that question virtually insures them their jobs.  Lastly, my peeps excel at chin-chucking.  That skill, and a bowl of kibbles, are the way to my heart.

 Me-usings and Me-emories

18 May 2015 - Lately the shorter peep and I have been working on  "heel".  Over the course of thirty feet, she sticks with me fairly well, and we appear to be a team.  But inevitably she will spot something along the way that requires further investigation, and she strays from my side.  I patiently pause the lesson until once again I have her attention, and we stroll on.  If I could just keep her focused on the task (but how?  dangle a bit of chocolate in front of her nose?), I think that we could graduate to the next chapter.  Someday, maybe, we will work on "fetch"...although at this point it is not skills-appropriate.

17 May 2015 - "To lie down, or not to lie down?"...some questions are just silly.  The real poser is "for how long?"  It probably won't surprise you to learn that I don't set an alarm.  Life doesn't have to be complicated:  just let the body tell you when to get up and when to get down.  With all the money I have saved by not buying clocks, I could purchase my very own bed.  But I am not picky:  if the spot is quiet, I can sleep anywhere.
