sunny boy

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 July 2015 - The peeps call this space the "sun room", and sometimes that name is apt...like today.  With its south-facing glass, the room can get quite toasty, which is my idea of a proper summer.  So here I bask, loving the heat and brightness.  Evidently these herbs like this combination as well, but they are situated right where they will throw a shadow on my spot...I may have to do some pruning when the shorter peep is not around.

28 July 2015 - It hasn't gone so far as "singing for my supper", but what I have to do to get a dollop of yogurt!  The shorter peep and I take breakfast together every morning, but my meal arrives one tablespoon at a time...and only after I have requested each one.  I have seen the container:  "fat free", so she can't claim to be concerned about my calorie intake.  Actually I think she enjoys this bit of interaction, where I pat her forearm and she dutifully delivers the next helping.  I am reminded of the Buddhist with his alms bowl.  The practice is certainly humbling, but the lesson shouldn't be wasted on a cat.

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 July 2015 - A cat stretched out on a hearth is a familiar image.  I prefer a slightly higher perch, so this makeshift coffee table, just feet from the wood stove, is perfect for enjoying the fire's heat.  We haven't needed to supplement the residual warmth since late in June, so I come here less frequently now.  But my peeps often gather around in the evening, with their books or a game board...which is reason enough for me to hang out as well.  Few words need to be exchanged (we are a bunch of introverts after all), but the camaraderie is enjoyed.  Isn't that the definition of family?

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 July 2015 - If I am not feeling sociable (no snickering), I retreat to this out-of-the-way spot.  It is the last place that the peeps look, and they know all my secrets (or so I let them think).  This ledge is cozy warm and offers a great view of the front yard...should I wish to avoid whatever is coming up the walk.  Because of its seclusion I also go here if I need some undisturbed shut-eye...which is how it came to be chosen this morning.  At least the shorter peep was thoughtful enough to turn off the camera's flash.

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 July 2015 - Part of homeland security is protection of our drinking water...well, my peeps' drinking water, as I am quite content to lap from the lake.  A simple deterrent is just maintaining an on-site presence.  It doesn't have to be every minute of the day and night:  random appearances are equally effective.  The bad guys need a predictable routine in order to sabotage the well, so I make certain that I can't be second-guessed...which isn't that difficult for a cat.  This responsibility is just one of many that I take on, without expectation of compensation.  I trust that you appreciate my sense of humor.

23 July 2015 - Let us say that my sleeping on the sofa back in Florida is frowned upon, but evidently the rules are different here.  Is this relaxing of "expectations" what the peeps mean by "vacation"?  If so, I am really enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, especially as I know, from past experience, that at some point we will pack up and return to our home base.  Once there I must see if the living room furniture is still off-limits.  I suspect that the rules will immediately kick in, but the inconsistency bugs me.  What is the difference?  At times like this I wish that the shorter peep and I could have a conversation.

Me-ow-my-oh!
Me-usings and Me-emories

22 July 2015 - I have never lived in a large urban area, so I have no experience with feeling small at the feet of skyscrapers.  However Nature certainly makes me aware of my insignificance in her plan.  This admission is not to say that I am of no consequence.  But in the big picture my stone's weight barely registers in the earth's total biomass.  I am a grain of sand on the beach...lovely and unique and outnumbered.  Maybe that is why my king cousin roars at the jungle:  to grab the attention of any and all lest he be overlooked or underestimated.  We felines deserve, and expect, recognition.

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 July 2015 - There are very few portraits hanging here in the house, so I don't take much offense in not being among those that are featured.  I choose to think that I am the foundation of our little family structure, and although essential, unnecessary to acknowledge.  After all I am here 24/7 (unlike my peeps who disappear for hours at a stretch...without a word of explanation) and a familiar face on the premises.  Having said that, I realize that could very well explain the omission:  one needs a photograph of those whose paths cross infrequently... as a prod to the memory.  So maybe I should feel flattered that my image is forever burned into their brains...but a framed 5x7 would still be nice.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

20 July 2015 - We have had little rain of late, so the lake level is dropping.  I am now able to hopscotch out from the shore for my drink of water, using the newly exposed rocks as my stepping stones.  Having no desire to swim, not even to get my paws wet, I am showing a good deal of chutzpah IMO to venture forth.  There are little feeps in these shallow waters, brown undulating shadows that I find interesting to watch...although insufficient enticement for me to splash after them.  It is unusual not to have a bit of wind to stir the surface, but today the lake is like glass.  If I were Narcissus I would remain on this rock, staring at my reflection.

Me-usings and Me-emories

18 July 2015 - Here I am, prowling the elements.  This photograph gives the viewer a sense of how above it all I am when gazing through the rails.  But to really understand the terrain and its inhabitants, one must walk it, nose alert to nuances.  So far I have seen three pesky squeeps and two striped cheeps, often playing atop these very rocks, and the number of water beeps is uncountable.  Part of the difficulty in getting a sense of how many is their habit of paddling past in one large glob of feathers.  Are they forming this flotilla for safety reasons, to pool warmth?  I don't know, and the language barrier prevents me from obtaining an answer.  I suppose they could be just a bunch of quack pots.

17 July 2015 - The shorter peep pointed out to me that I have a conflicted relationship with bars...not the sort at which one could sip a black cat, but as in the slats of a cage.  I do recall a number of photographs with me peering through the cracks, limbs extended in seeming supplication.  I think that that says more about my surroundings than about my psyche.  My sleep is certainly not troubled by thoughts of entrapment.  To view the porch railing and sofa back as instead playground equipment might get closer to the truth.  There is no need to worry, no reason to draw dark conclusions:  I am just goofing around.

a fresh beginning

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

15 July 2015 - Even in the middle of a Nova Scotia July I might have to resort to a pool of sunshine for warmth.  It is very true that I prefer to be baked rather than frozen, and often this summer I have had to seek some auxiliary heat source.  About half of those times the sun could not be found, and if I was lucky the shorter peep would offer me a warmed towel on which to curl.  But the last two weeks had me convinced that summer was totally in control of our temperatures... which is why this morning took me by surprise.  Perhaps I was chilled by the predawn dew, maybe I am a bit run-down...whatever the underlying cause I am feeling much better now.

Me-usings and Me-emories

14 July 2015 - I don't grow tired of my porch view, but twilight settling on the lake is probably my favorite vista.  Of course, my perception of dusk differs greatly from that of my peeps, but the overall effect is still one of peace.  This time of day is so soothing to the senses:  the beeps have gone to roost, the squeeps are blessedly quiet, and any boat traffic has long ceased.  The water's surface acts as something of a mirror, reflecting the oblique rays and brightening the air.  The captured result is Calvin by lake light...I think it would make a lovely oil painting, but the locals seems to prefer hooked rugs.
