antics road show

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

31 March 2015 - As a stray kitten, my birth date is unrecorded.  But my peeps arbitrarily, or not, chose tomorrow, April Fool's Day, as the day to celebrate my appearance in the world eleven years ago.  This post is my jump on all the tomfoolery (and I will probably be otherwise occupied tomorrow).  You would be an impressive guesser to nail this photograph's particulars:  I am climbing up the handrail of the porch steps, an incline of almost 45 degrees.  I do it just because I can...and to hear the happy sound made by the shorter peep in response to my exploit.  My life is always better when the peeps are happy.

spring into action

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 March 2015 - Besides flowers, spring brings the flippin' beeps.  The shorter peep enjoys their arrival, and puts out seeds for them to eat.  Her enthusiasm doesn't extend to the squeeps that show up for a handout...but that is the price of admission to the buffet.  Every year one of the beeps decides to defend the dining room window, and its crazed behavior disturbs my equilibrium and offends my sense of justice.  I realize that there is a thick sheet of glass between me and it, but my emotions get the better of me...and I point out that the dining room window is rightfully mine.  There is no reasoning with these fly-by-nights, but I will outlast it.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

29 March 2015 - Well, at least the sun is shining:  that is my attempt to make the best of a less-than-optimal day.  I would suggest locating a patch of sunlight and hunkering down in its warmth...unless, of course, you have a peep who will heat a towel for you to lie upon.  And the word "pampered" is not applicable when both parties act kindly and caringly toward the other.  Don't be a whiner, it is unbecoming.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

28 March 2015 - Ah, the colors of spring surround me, and I don't even have to go outdoors.  But from the various windows in our domicile I can see pink, white, fuchsia, yellow, red...a fresh palette to lift anyone's spirits out of the winter doldrums.  I don't feel the need to mention the pale greenness of new leaves, a transition that admittedly has me and the peeps sneezing, but a lovely background canvas even so.   Today someone has, without the permission of many, turned down nature's thermostat, forcing me to curl up and wait for the rebound.  I hate any temperature below 68 degrees...that's 20 Celsius for my Canada acquaintances, who may in fact be responsible for pushing this chill all the way to Florida.

nap sacked

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

27 March 2015 - I am a very agreeable fellow, who thinks that a show of solidarity with my peeps is good for the family unit.  So when the taller one decided to take a nap this afternoon, I seconded the motion.  Notice that we have one another's backs, an arrangement that without words states that we are good buddies.  Any threat will definitely come from outside our little circle; meanwhile we can snooze without worries to the sound of falling rain.

high gene

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

26 March 2015 - First-world problems hardly warrant that designation when contrasted with third-world problems, and both viewpoints are from the vantage of a peep.  Walk awhile on all fours to grasp the deep divide separating us quadrupeds from humanity.  You guys would definitely be the great unwashed if you had to bathe as we felines do.  Firstly peep tongues are inadequate for the task, and as to bringing one's foot to one's mouth only infants and a few yogis possess the needed flexibility.  Then there is that small matter of aversion:  peeps seem to be a squeamish lot.  So, yes, the next time that you comment on how clean we cats keep ourselves, ponder that statement...and admit that you are lesser beings.

hush-hush

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

25 March 2015 - I don't have a lair per se, but there are a number of places in our domicile where I can, if quiet and still, go undetected for long periods.  Everyone needs a place to which he can retreat, to be alone, to unravel a knotty problem, to weigh the pros and cons.  I might add s-p-y, but then my peeps would be tipped off, my cover would literally be blown.  There really isn't anything nefarious in my wishing to take it all in...it is just part and parcel of being curious.

critical mass

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

24 March 2015 - I have walked every square inch of this house, minus the crow's nest, so when something is moved or something new appears, I am immediately aware.  What I do next depends on the thing:  often a sniff is sufficient to confirm that it is an old familiar, just not in the usual spot; however occasionally the thing registers with all senses as foreign, and then observation is called for.  Usually an intent stare of five to ten seconds will prompt the flight response in the thing, if it is animate.  After that period of time I conclude that it is safe to approach.  My methods are very scientific, but that doesn't take the fun out of the equation.

no rest for the lick-ed

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

23 March 2015 - Recent postings may have given you the impression that I am an outdoor cat, but that is how reality can be skewed by a few pictures.  Mostly I am a homebody.  There are far fewer pests indoors, and one doesn't have to be constantly on alert when inside.  I suppose there are creatures that can sleep with the equivalent of one eye open, but I don't find vigilance very restful.  And we cats must have our beauty rest.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

22 March 2015 - Curiosity without an equal dose of caution shortens one's life.  I am aware of, although take umbrage at, the phrase "scaredy cat".  Usually that type of statement is intended to goad someone into doing something, at best, inane, at worst, unwise.  But we cats keep our own counsel and watch our own back.  So don't try to hurry me along:  I have a pace with which I am comfortable and reasons that don't translate well across species.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

21 March 2015 - Did someone say that spring is officially here??  As my peeps will attest, I have been shedding my winter coat for weeks now, so I knew it was around the corner.  I like spring primarily because it is the warm-up act for summer.  As such it is a time filler IMO...there to whet the audience's appetite for the main course.  Don't misunderstand me:  if there were only two choices, winter and spring, I would select the latter in a heartbeat.  Fortunately nature doesn't conduct herself by a democratic vote, which means that the ignored populace feels entitled to complain about her weather choices.

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

20 March 2015 - I really hate to be predictable, but we cats are compelled, I don't know a better word for it, to be atop any relative maximum.  To lay persons that means that if my peep places a newspaper on the floor next to me, I can't help but sit on it.  It certainly is more gratifying if the height difference can be measured in inches, even better if in feet, but we take what we are given.  Which is why I find myself perched upon this iron hemisphere...because I must.  Once accomplished, the urge subsides, allowing me after several satisfying minutes to get down from this perch and to go in search of the next high ground.

dis guys

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

19 March 2015 - At times like these I will admit that a gray tabby has the advantage.  The only background in which I don't stand out is darkness, but in minimal light most animals would go unnoticed, at least until they moved.  Black on black is very chic, but on a day with any sun whatsoever my dark coat definitely restricts my sneakiness.  I would not want to lose my hunting prowess...who knows what the future holds?...but in my current situation I no longer need to prey before a meal.  I still enjoy my saunters through the woods, but the pressure is off.
