I kit you not

7 August 2020 - Can you recall, perhaps with regret, that internal debate of "sure, why not?" versus "let's rethink this, shall we?"  The particular outcome suggested in this picture took a leap in an unexpected direction when the shorter peep intervened.  I don't remember what she said... it was more the sharp tone that got my attention and doused my adrenaline.  Since this change (more honestly, delay) of plans I have given the question, "can I jump the gap?", further thought... and it isn't a great distance nor a limb-breaking height.  So which of us is the scaredy-cat??

6 August 2020 - A goodly part of my day, at least when both of us are awake, is spent in the shorter peep's proximity.  We both emanate content vibes during this time, so you can imagine my surprise when boundaries are placed.  I really did think that she would enjoy company at her early morning meal... evidently we can't see eye-to-eye on this one.  Some expressions don't require a common language, and her displeasure when I joined her at breakfast was unmistakable.  I tried to assure her that my intentions were purely social (and not a distraction by which to grab her unappealing food), but the conversation broke down.  Peeps can be so prickly.

5 August 2020 - I suppose I should have read the fine print in my job description.  Even so, it is far better, i.e. easier, to oversee office cleanup than to actually do it.  I mentioned to the shorter peep that a bit more trash could be stuffed in, and I am still processing her look.  Accurate communication between different species is difficult, and numerous misunderstandings, some quite hilarious, exist.  I for one think full disclosure of one's thoughts is not a healthy idea.

4 August 2020 - The law is beyond my expertise, but in the 21st century aren't I a tad young to be employed?  I am certain that the answer to that depends upon many factors:  what country are we talking about?  is the laborer being paid untraceable cash?  is said worker one of the business family?  I am not really complaining, especially since my desk job is mostly managerial, with flex-time.  And there really is no reason for me to clock in unless one of my employee/peeps is slogging away... which frees up quite a few hours in my day.  Honest work is supposedly gratifying, but in the case of cats our self-worth doesn't require propping up.

3 August 2020 - No longer saddled with worries about the shorter peep, I am free to explore our space together... a good use of time as it still allows me to keep an eye on her wanderings.  There is a spot not too far removed from my safe place that she favors in the morning, an area of which I was aware (I distinctly recall hiding there shortly after my arrival) but not totally familiar.  By using her chair as the anchor point of my radius, I am sniffing my way toward a more complete mental mapping.  Distractions are to a minimum, as it is still "night" for the taller peep.  But there are still soft rustles and attention-getting raps filtering through the walls, things to categorize and assign to the threat spectrum.  Like every day there is work to be done.

2 August 2020 - Napping two afternoons in a row!  I completely endorse this post-misadventure routine.  Whether or not this daytime rest will help the shorter peep extend her wakefulness into the night I will see.  Just as I could never successfully impersonate an orange tabby, she may not possess the stuff of us night owls.  One personal discovery:  I rather like the view from a slightly elevated spot, even if it opens the door to superiority accusations.  If part of my charge is guarding the abode and my two peeps, then an unobstructed position is smart... why didn't I think of it sooner?

1 August 2020 - Responsibility can be a burden.  Just as my eyes are prepared to roll back into my head, my ears detect an unusual sound, originating outside our abode.  So the heart rate quickens and I train my senses in that direction.  How long a duration of typical background noise means "all's clear"?  Whether one waits, barely daring to breathe, for thirty seconds or five minutes, time creeps by with muscles tensed in fight/flight preparation.  If I were just protecting myself, I would make a beeline for my safe spot.  But the shorter peep, fragile from her recent misadventure and seemingly unaware of the threat, needs me to hold the line.
