regarding that

7 Nov 2022 - I'm fairly certain that the shorter peep laid this cloth on the bed to make the spot more comfy for me... and it was.  I tried it out immediately after its appearance, not wishing her to think I was an ingrate.  It contained her smells, so that added to my relaxation (not as good as her lap, but still very thoughtful).  A good friend delights one with unexpected gestures, acts that to the cold eye are insignificant but that lift the recipient's spirits.  We cats do smile... if you're unfamiliar with that look, just picture a purring cat with eyes half-closed.

lofty pursuit

6 Nov 2022 - This particular window ledge is where I can catch the earliest light... a piece of information that is quite useful on a chilly morning.  But even if the ambient temperature is acceptable, this spot gives a great overlook of our front flank.  It is from here that I watched yesterday's large creature amble away, and it is from this direction that strange peeps wander up.  Those particular visitors make me glad that my vantage is so elevated... most never raise their eyes to spot me, but I keep my eyes on them.  Sometimes they approach the house and then immediately leave; other times a two-part noise can be heard, and then my two peeps usher these unknowns into our home.  Knowing the quickest route to under the bed is another useful piece of information.

5 Nov 2022 - Aaah, my screened porch is paws-down my favorite spot... as long as the temperatures are acceptable, and they have been that of late.  It is a soothing treat to be out there, doing my job from a cozy vantage point.  And you would be surprised at the wildlife I see:  yesterday four very large creatures, one with pointy things rising from its ears, sashayed by.  Despite their besting me in size and numbers, they gave my perch a wide berth.  Admittedly my watchful glare didn't seem to hurry them along, but eventually they made their way past and down the driveway.  They mostly respected my property, although did munch the occasional green stuff along their route... fine by me, as leaves are not in my diet.

4 Nov 2022 - It is a frequent theme - I do a lot of waiting.  Some of this idle time is just the nature of my job:  surveillance, if rushed, is sloppy and incomplete.  But then there is my dependence on the two peeps for certain life-sustaining items.  Although I know well the starting and stopping points of my food run, I am unable to put the kibble in the bowl (heck, even on the floor, a starving cat isn't picky).  Likewise the filling of my water bowl is beyond my skills... and its unavailability would be noticed even sooner.  The water left on the shower floor is lappable (and the act makes me feel very daring), but it too dries up.  So I wait out of necessity, while still managing to strike a handsome pose.

the life of Shamus

Shamus on view

Me-usings and Me-emories

3 November 2022 - I vacillate between full-tilt and napping... the latter recharging me for another round of interloper intervention.  But even when my eyes are closed, the ears are scanning for trouble... it is rare to find a cat in deep sleep.  Catching ZZZs on my screened porch is a combination of work and down time.  Lying here, inches from a favored hiding spot for beeps, I can relax while doing my job.  I really love what I do (who wouldn't?) and routinely arrive early for my shift, eager to see what has changed overnight.  I use those nocturnal hours to plan and strategize (and so does the enemy).

2 Nov 2022 - Sometimes a rampant posture will get the interloper's attention faster than a four-legged stance.  I wouldn't volunteer to walk across the floor on my hind legs, but against this portal pane it is quite easy... in fact the harder part is keeping the back feet on the ledge (the story of my falling off, even if I meant to do it, would quickly spread beyond our domicile).  And besides upping the threat level, it affords me a loftier viewpoint, answering the question as to what lies beyond the assailant... did it come with reinforcements?  Typically not.  My experience as a sentry favors the angry loner... and that I can handle on three legs.

1 Nov 2022 - Do I approve the contents of this message?  An unannounced visit to the office uncovered the shorter peep embellishing my reputation... but in a good way, so the latest installment in my autofiction went to press.  I don't weigh in every day (I am, after all, a busy purrson, with numerous responsibilities), but I've found random surveillance to be more effective that scheduled appearances.  The bottom line is I trust my amanuensis (plus we cats have no problem differentiating ourselves from our public image... we fail miserably at recognizing ourselves in a caricature).
