a cautionary tail

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

7 December 2014 -  Sometimes you get what you asked for, so be very deliberate in those requests.  In my case it is an open door, but then I am presented with a whole new set of questions:  Do I really want to go outside?  What else is out there?  Am I going to be assailed by the neighborhood bully?  "Nervous as a cat" does have some basis in fact:  we possess nine lives, but we are loathe to waste one.

5 December 2014 - Not exactly the cookie jar that I have been caught raiding...but really I am trying to tidy up a messy drawer.  We cats are meticulous in our appearance, and in general prefer our surroundings spartan and tidy, so you can imagine that December is offensive on many fronts.    Were I not compelled to take daily naps I could possibly succumb to obsessive-compulsive behavior.  There certainly is a nagging inner voice that instructs me to circle twice before lying down, to wash a paw while deliberating a course of action, to stand in front of a door to get peeps' attention.  It is all very tiring.

4 December 2014 - The taller peep and I have donned our survival gear, knowing that in a few weeks our domicile will be cleared of the seasonal hazards.  That knowledge makes the current situation a tad more palatable but no less chaotic.  Thankfully the weather allows us to escape outside, where we just have falling leaves and downed limbs to contend with.  Occasionally I completely succumb to the craziness, pouncing on the ball of ribbon or hiding in an opened box.  We all have our coping mechanisms, and one of mine is to revert to kittenhood... where everything is a toy wanting my attention.

3 December 2014 - Yogurt is a food that I heartily recommend, and this isn't a paid endorsement as I eat it whenever my peeps sit down for a meal.  I like to be sociable despite being a grazer, so a saucer of yogurt is the answer.  Families should make it a priority to gather together at least once a day, as it keeps the individuals aware of what is going on in the lives of the other members and socializes the younger ones.  In the process of becoming "domesticated" we cats had to dampen our natural distrust and soften our independent streak.  Compromise is how we get along...and caring is why we compromise.

Me-usings and Me-emories

2 December 2014 - An occasional blue day can't be avoided.  I look back at my precarious beginnings and wonder what stroke of luck delivered me.  The story is only familiar to me as a second-hand report:  I was found on the local college campus, outside the library, by a kind-hearted woman, who just happened to know that my peeps needed a cat.  And so I came to live with them as a scrawny three-month old, understandably undersized from my paw-to-mouth existence.  It was a good fit, and we continue to enjoy one another's company.  All relationships have their rubbing points, and you are aware, through this dialogue, that the occasional dim-wittedness of my peeps can be trying.   Probably my unflappable good-nature irks them at times.  But we were meant to be family.

I know some new tricks,

A lot of good tricks.

I will show them to you.

jingled nerves

Me-ow-my-oh!

Me-usings and Me-emories

1 December 2014 - I am doing my part in absorbing the domicile's negative energy.  Something very tangible happened this morning:  with the turning of the calendar page, my shorter peep noticably paled...and ever since her aura has been erupting solar flares of anxious color.  Telling someone to chill often has the opposite effect, so I am leading by example:  sit down, put up your feet, let your mind go blank.  So far my effort is unacknowledged, which means that tomorrow I shall have to try harder.  Alas, the burden of a responsible life.

Me-usings and Me-emories

30 November 2014 - December is a frenetic month in my household, so I am enjoying this final day of quiet and calm.  Soon the shorter peep will pull out the boxes of glittery baubles and glam up the place.  I think the taller peep and I prefer the muted palette of the other eleven months, but we both also know that the shorter peep doesn't negotiate on this particular matter.  So we will keep to the periphery, and let her be stressed and happy.  The yuletide spirit is admittedly infectious, which means that I will not be able to resist batting a few of the low-hanging danglers...just to watch them spin and swing.  As a self-respecting cat I draw the line at wearing a red satin bow...even though I would look smashing.
